A "below average" HTML game making $2,104/month, why?

Hey, if you're one of those HTML game lovers, you've probably heard of this game.

https://f95zone.to/threads/small-town-v1-11-dlc-jake-still.120823/

There's something that I really don't understand and I'm here to ask you about it. This is a below average game because it has a rating of 2.7 stars from 27 people. It's also a game that has barely been improved since the first version and hasn't had its bugs fixed in years. It also has no real story, it's just a game where you click on things and open porn gifs. But 354 people pay this developer for this game every month and he earns $2,104/month. What do people find interesting about this game?

My hunch is he's got around the incest issue with Patron by not hard coding it in and letting you pick the relationship at start. Or it could be there is a bigger demand for instant gratification, in your face porn right off the bat than we think.

My explanation is that he has found a niche of small but enthusiastic followers. Most people, you and I for example, aren't interested and even think it poor quality but it won't matter if there is the occasional person who likes it a real lot and pays for it.

I played it ages ago and won't again. Memory is that the porn gifs had a certain aesthetic and were pretty well chosen to fit the theme of the 'game' (in terms of porn content - with regard to story content they were all over the place). I'm guessing that might do it for some?

The fact that it's not a game, but a porn selector.

There's a whole world outside of F95zone, with a lot of people who just seek for pure porn but don't want to bother browsing pages and pages before finding a video they could like. Especially if that video end being disappointing because not jumping directly to the "good part". Those persons don't care about the story or realization, as long as they can fap on the content.
And apparently this guy found where to find of them.

Maybe it's the writing of the scenes? he can be skilled at writing the sex scenes. A good erotica writer is a plus.

No, I'm not downloading a straight game to confirm this.

There are a lot of games that have stopped development because they make 5 figures a month no matter what they do.

Over the years I came to realize that F95 users, Patrons and Steam buyers are not 100% the same demographic. A game could succeed with one demographic and leave the others underwhelmed.

first of all, review stars don't really indicate the quality of a game. there are many developers who give their games 5 star reviews with fake accounts. or who are fans of popular games and do the same thing to them. on the contrary, there are also some who give 1 star reviews to bring some games down. that's why I don't really care about review scores.

also the game can be of poor quality. i think the question to ask is why patreon pages of games that use real porn images are not banned? i'm sure it's illegal. we're not talking about an incest game or hardcore content here. we're talking about using footage from a movie that "real" people created to make money. i think that's the real question and i don't know the answer.

as for your question, maybe the producer has loyal backers. summertime saga also didn't release any updates for a long time but loyal backers kept giving money.

I checked to see if there was some good erotica, but instead I found an amalgamation of dry, ungrammatical and fragmented sentences tied together for a “story” with an horrendous gameplay.
This shit turns any Twilight fanfiction into fucking Moby Dick in comparison

Then I have no idea just like you do. I am an HTML dev, and I know the limitations of the platform. Let alone using Real porn, as he does, it introduces even heavier limitations to gameplay or features (HTML games like Course of Temptation wouldn't be possible if they used real porn). Maybe it's like Lerd0 says, it's a good combination of patreon benefits that allow him to maintain that level of earnings.

No, I'm not going to criticize the game, I also have a bad case of engrish and my game can feel linear at times (and the game has bugs... I swear that my code is fucking alive and conspires against me), so I can't throw rocks to anyone.

Haha so True!
Wait until you reach the next step: You look at your code, to improve it or add a functionality, just to discover that it shouldn't works ; yet so far it's working without problem.

It's something that happen more often that professionals are ready to admit it. But when you look at advanced open source project, it's not this exceptional to find comments that goes like, "I know, there's a bug here, but if you fix it, everything will stop to works".
There's a relatively well known case like this ; my memory don't improve with the age, so don't quote me on this, but I think that it's in the source for the original Counter-Strike. There's two consecutive call to the exact same function, with the exact same parameters. And a comment before them, warning that if you remove one of the call, then the call will have no effect...
For whatever totally unknown reason, you need to process the same code, with the same values, twice in a row for it to works, and it only happen in that part of the code. For any other place where the function is called, one call is enough, except... there.

There's a horny idiot born every second, this guy just managed to find a whole pack of them.:coffee:
Think about mmos and how some companies go , same principle i think.
Whales are a cancer of gaming industry, they encourage devs to chase the $ like a pack of starved wild dogs, so instead of improving the gameplay and the like they're always busy inventing new and more insidious ways to suck $ off whales.

Yes, and the "story" was moronic too, like you hint at. The guy has a fatal boner disease, so his mother and sister must help him out. But he can't masturbate because then his mother or sister comes in and then he can't continue. :WaitWhat: For some reason.

"Moby Dick". "Whale-hunting", "whales". You and zARRR give off some big Moby Dick energy.

And then this illness is forgotten after… the first 2 minutes.
Or the fact that the game tries to create an “interactive npc” system to take care of the boner illness but it failed it so hard that it was dropped completely.

Stupid plots aren't necessarily a bad thing and are very common in porn, they let you detach from the situation and focus on the porn.

It's easy to shit on porn logic but sometimes you just want something lightweight and easily consumable.

I don't think it's the fatal boner disease - that's passable. It's the MC is not "corrupt" enough to masterbate with the mother and sister nearby. Yet he is corrupt enough to bang them (often in front of his other family members :D :D)
