"Summer Cleaning House"...Had it happen to me a couple of times. It's frustrating, I know. I wouldn't mind a deletion if not for the fact that a number of my comments are in response to someone Else initiating an "off-topic" comment from the start. If comments are going to be policed, at least police the instigators for "off-topic" comments so that no one else would even have to respond. I've since learned to "report" each "off-topic" or "racially inflammatory" comment, that way I don't have to be frustrated anymore.
