"Our history can prove to be the strongest indicator of our future if we take pause to remember it."Oh man, that is history.
Their neighbours went out to conquer, and Germany used what they had. In the long run this gave them this technical advantage but I don't think it was a choice.
The envy that the Netherlands, France, Spain caused them with their conquests must have been enormous
As for the purity of German iron ore deposits, I haven't heard, processing techniques are important. I have studied the iron-carbon diagram.

I like the direction your argument is going... and thank you. Yes, indeed the 16th century conquests were enjoyed largely by Spain initially. In the first half of the 16th century the gold and silver 'acquired' from the new world comprised 50% of that country's GDP. With Spain's political will that wealth allowed for a king (Charles) to rule over a united Spain. He also became Holy Roman Emperor and first seat for the Order of the Golden Fleece. However, the financial stewardship that allowed Charles to reify economic concepts and influence continental politics came from the Fugger banking dynasty (a German concern.)
You are also spot on when you say that "processing techniques are important'. Case in point is the English who invented the puddling process that they used to transform their 'dirty' ore into a product that was nearly comparable to their German counterparts. In 150 years of naval conflict not a single English canon exploded, in contrast during the same period more French sailors died from canon rupture than by enemy fire.
Again, this ties in nicely with an on-topic discussion. We hope that L&P can refine his game development process so that a self-inflicted hemorrhage of his patrons are not lost in the near future. Sincerely, I truly wish him well as he is a talented artist.
