So, I've had this on my mind for a while now, but first off, I'm curious to hear people's opinions on stories in adult games. When you play an adult game, what do you first expect about the story? I guess for me, I like to see games that do not entirely focus on the subject of sex and whatnot, which contradicts a major point considering that it's an adult game. However, I find that stories that don't force sex to be connected directly to a game's story seem to work somewhat better, basically making the sexual themes optional rather than have sexual themes be essential, but that's just me.
Another aspect that I ponder about is if there is a sensible reason for the character to be engaging in sexual interactions with others in the game. I've seen a couple games where it somewhat makes sense, such as escaping from enemies that want to fuck the protagonist, or a protagonist who wants to fuck other characters, which make sense generally, but I'm curious to know other users thoughts on what other stories would make sense for the protagonist to engage in sex in different scenarios, like if an enemy is trying to kill the protagonist, but the protagonist defeats said enemy and retaliates by fucking them, or something.
I dunno, I'm just curious to see what others think about with stories in adult games, and what scenarios would work and wouldn't work. What're your thoughts?

I expect the "adult" part of it to be actually adult. Or rather, i hope.
Because hoping for the story to not be a childish piece of crap is about the extent of what you can do.
As a consumer at least.

Adult game is more than just description of someone's WeeWee being shoved into the nearest hole you can find.
The meaning of "adult" for me translates into:
A game for grown ups, and being a grown up entails more than just the ability to fuck things or being fucked by things.
I generally view sex in my games as the bonus fun, not the primary one.

Personally i don't mind if they are essential, but only if the non-sex element is also up to par, quality-wise.

It all depends on context. Take for example a prison game, on that, the last scenario you posted

enemy is trying to kill the protagonist, but the protagonist defeats said enemy and retaliates by fucking them

Would make sense, since rape is expected on a prison setting, on the other hand, that the player not be forced at all in sex on a prison is unlikely. But in another setting it may make sense.

What I expect differs from what I want to see sometimes. Even for vanilla content, to echo a poster above, I'd appreciate "adult" content & writing. How adults have a conversation, intermix some sensitive themes sometimes, and I always appreciate some good banter (less meme-y and more back-and-forth). Even funny, parody-like games can still be "adult" in nature without getting too melodramatic. [e.g. Power Vacuum, Above the Clouds, Midlife Crisis (maybe).]

If I'm playing an adult game, we may differ in that I hope there's sexual scenes but only if they make sense. Like how violence is used as a literary tool to progress a story and incite action and change relationships, I'd prefer if sexual scenes were used to change or accelerate relationship dynamics, based on setting and plot. [e.g. Leap of Faith, Artemis, Summer's Gone, DoD]

Some games are targeted primarily on sex and have a bit of story just to keep things going; that's okay too as long as they don't try to portray the game's story as grander than it is. If it's a tropy, lighthearted game, in my opinion then let it just be that. I think Flirty F did this well; short, sweet, some story but 'progression' was quick and reasonable for a lighthearted game.

All that's to say what I expect from current adult games is a bad mix between story-sexual content with stepwise progression (teasing -> handjob -> blowjob -> sex). When a game beats these expectations I am pleasantly surprised.

Sometimes I want a compelling game with decent gameplay and interesting story with some sex on the side as a motivational element, other times I want minimal story but a more interactive gameplay with sex in focus.

Lets take my recent attempt at kingsdoms of corruption.
Passible story, decent characters, Horrible gameplay and a compleet lack of choice.
I liked the idea of the game but the more i played it the more i grew to hate it.
I wanted to enslave, dominate shatter.
Stop being a moralizing prick main character.
You mind control people.
That makes you evil be default.

Meanwhile plater(I think) Is a silly fun mind control game.
I love the character's and am willing to overlook how stupidly easy it is to mind control them.
Hell the girlfriend face when you told her why back to the future suck was great.

A good story can make all the difference.
The problem is most arent able to write a good story.
Or even a decent one.

It would contradicts if it was a "porn game". A purely horror game is as an adult game as a fuck feast one can be.

How do this make sense ?

OK, there's a zombie apocalypse, and for whatever reason the zombie don't want brain but sex. This, I can get it. But what I totally can't buy, because it make no sense at all, is how this will lead to sex.
From the MC point of view, his/her surviving depend on the fact that (s)he don't have sex with those zombies. They would do it none stop, gang rapping him/her and (s)he would slowly die of starvation, or just want to die. It's still possible for the MC to have sex with others than those zombies, but (s)he'll not do it because the zombie want to fuck. "Oh, look, everyone want to fuck us to death, don't this turn you on ? Let's fuck..." ; this make no sense.
And the same apply even more if they aren't zombies. An enemy is by definition someone who don't want your good, what imply that you want everything you can imagine except doing what they expect you to do. Therefore, here it's the worse possible reason for the MC to have sex.

This only make sense in a storyless game with sex on loose. Yet when I say that it make sense, it's from a gameplay point of view only.

The fact that (s)he's a sexually active adult among consenting attractive sexually active adults is a good start...
What's missing in most adult games is not a reason to engage in sex, but a motive to be in a position where you can engage in sexual interactions.
MC is a horny teenagers who's dick is actually in his mother hands, what other reason do you need to have sex the next instant ? MC is a working adult in a club, french kissing a half drunk co-worker who accepted to share a drink or two with him. Once again, what other reason do you need to have sex in a really near future ?
What matter is how and why the MC ended in this position. Why is he sexually attracted by his mother and why did she respond to this attraction ? Why the MC asked to this co-worker, and why did she agreed ?

Too often, adult games give either a mystical/magical answer to this, or no answer at all. Worse, not only MC is either cursed by a succubus/ring/whatever, or an animal in heat that want to jump in any panty that cross his journey, but the girls all find this totally natural and at most try to be hard to get.
The worse being the "I totally hate you" kind of girls who will spread their legs once they see MC's dick. And I don't talk about the bitch sister who act like this because they want to feel their brother deep in their ass since they hit puberty. I talk about all those blank personality deprived girls who don't care a single second that the MC exist until the moment they engage in sex.
