Animations Have Killed Other Games For Me (Sad Face)

Hi,

I didn't know where to post this or whether it was worth posting at all but I somehow felt the need and wanted to see if other people have similar feelings.

I have to say, with games such as Milfy City, Lily of the Valley and Lewd Island to name a few. Not only has the quality of the imagery improved over the years thanks to improvements in the software available and also the abilities of the developer, but the introduction of animations has made it difficult for me to play games without them especially games using the Ren'Py and RPGM engines.

It's similar to riding a bike. Once you've experienced something bigger or better, it becomes increasingly hard to go back and that is how I feel now about these games. As much as I love seeing animations and I appreciate the work that goes into making them, it's turning me off from so many other games that don't use them.

To offer another perspective...

I do enjoy animations. They add that little something extra to a scene. It doesn't even have to be a looping animation of sexy times. I've seem some newer projects use animations to add an exclamation to a character reation, maybe just a simple body movement, or an idle animation while they are the focus of a conversation. It's all good!

But saying that they've ruined other games for me? Not so much, for me. Animations are just a tool in the storytelling toolbox. An animation doesn't make any particular game good, just as not having animations makes a game bad. What makes a game good or not is how it handles its presentation, story, and characters using the tools available.

As an example: Doki Doki Literature club is your classic VN game, and it has no animations, yet remains one of the most compelling game experiences I've ever had.

Further example: Just last week I downloaded a game from here that had pretty decent animations, yet the game failed to capture my attention.

So, bottom line: A game can be absolutely be good without animations. They are by no means required. At least for me anyways.

If animations were that important to me I would just watch regular porn on xvideos, pornhub or any regular site, those sites have like 100% full animated scenes

Jokes aside, most of the times I see an animation I feel like it is limited to what the developers knows or to what the engine has to offer, but with loops animations I feel that the developers can whatever they originally intended to do instead of limiting themself to what they have in hand

Mostly is animation limited by time that Dev can throw into it. In rendering. So you cannot afford rendering 1000 frames animations. Cause it is takes one week in rendering :D

Are you saying Ren'Py games don't have animations or are you saying you don't like the Ren'Py games that don't have animation? Because if it's the former, Ren'Py does indeed allow for animations and video playback.

If eye candy is everything then there is other places on the web that offer better than any animations in games such as these. Without a good story etc, everything else is moth...

Ponders..... Playing Zork back in the day..... wonder how fun people would find that these days...

I see animations as a bonus, especially really good ones. When devs use animations its tends to be one or two angles and the scene finishes, but when its not animated there are usually a lot more angles and longer scenes. For me unless the animation or loop is really good I would rather have diff angles/pov any day.

But for people with less imagination animations probably help, but since I have been a visual novel weeb for a long time its easier for me with just CGs. Though one complaint is that western devs tend to not use sex sounds but every japanese vn has em so I struggle with some games on here.

I dont really care for animations, they are near the bottom criteria when i choose to play a game. Plus they take a lot of time to make, time which could be spent on better things.

Animations make the game file huge, especially idle ones where they serve no purpose but to look cool. As said above it's mainly time, not so much as the rendering time as you can do that overnight if you wanted, it's the time it takes to set them up.

Animations can kill a game for me, but not the ones who don't have them, but those that do. Animations are an awful drain of resources, so when a dev, particularly who doesn't have top notch equipment, places too much focus on animations, the story and other content can suffer for it. It can result in shorter updates, longer development cycles and lower quality overall for something that is of little value to me.

"Good" animations are nice but in no way essential for me (the "bad" short frame ones are more a detriment I feel).

Dynamic renders that show changing poses and facial expressions that match the situation are much more important but even lacking that good writing can make up for it.

I have to say I prefer a good and nice imagery over animations. For me animations aren't needed to create a good, beautiful, erotic, artistic or sexy scene.
I am also not a fan of preset animations, that you see in a lot of games. These are the animations that are bad in my opinion. Even a bad looking animation isn't immediatly a bad animation. If you can feel the work behind it, it is in my opinion a good animation.

Where I don't need animations are the sex scenes. A lot of times it just feels like you are watching a short porn that suddenly stops or loops.
Where animations can add a lot to the feeling of the story and the scenery is when the animations show "normal" stuff, like walking, camera movements, car driving, etc. I also love the eye blinking animations :)

And then there are animations that look incredibly good, where even I am saying like damn please make the whole game animated :D

It's interesting reading people's opinions on this and how many of you don't really care for animations and prefer content and story. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy playing games with lots of text and choice-based outcomes such as games using the ADRIFT engine but for me the reward has always been a good picture scene at the end accommodated by a short description and these animations mesmerise me in a way more than a static picture ever could. Anna Exciting Affection for example or Adventures of Willy D.

It seems I'm on my own in this. :p

I guess it boils down to what you play games for.

I get how you feel.I can enjoy many games with no animation if the writing and scene composition complement each other well but like you said after experiencing some some high level animation, you can't but feel something is missing in the back of your mind when playing games of similar categories that doesn't have animation.Look on the bright side,as technology is improving the chances of getting high level of animation in adult games will be significantly higher.

I understand what you are saying, I like animations as well and I prefer moving frames above still pictures that even a 2 sec loop I am happy with it. Sometimes while playing a game say for example like tyrant I am like oh if only this scene had some animation. Saying that I still play and enjoy the still frames ones there so many good stories and games with buildup which i think doesn’t need animation you just need to forget about that one game (I am pretty sure we all have that one/ few game/s we know nothing can trump them) and try to enjoy/immerse yourself in the game you playing.

I'm with you 100% and am probably a step further as I'm quickly realizing I'm more into real time 3d animations. The ren'py animations are top notch but there's just such a disconnect when the cumshot happens and it's static. I hear others say "I can watch porn if I want to see it happening" but in games you can design unrealistic expectations that are sometimes hard to find in real life. Just my two cents.
