are text based games okay?

Books seem to be doing just fine, so I don't see why an interactive book would be an issue. Your game is just going to rely more heavily on the strength of your writing than the other games.

That said, it's not all black an white:
  • Some VN's have a rendered image for practically every action that's taken in the game.
  • Then there's VN's that just use a background for the environment and standard images for every character in the scene.
  • Further down you get almost pure text with just a single image to help set the scene, be it an environment or a character.
  • Finally there's just pure text.

Yes, text-based games are fine, but keep in mind that:
  1. A lot of people are interested in some kind of graphics and then there are a few who are primarily interested in pretty pictures with boobies. So your audience will be a lot smaller.
  2. People will judge you for what you do have, which is (mostly) text, so they will expect a higher quality of writing. Enough VNs have their run-ins with untidy English, poor characters and poor narratives, but they get by because of graphics or gameplay. If you go with pure text, your writing has to be good enough to carry the game. If English is not your native language, either be prepared to pay for an editor or work on your English to the point that people start to occasionally mistake you for a native speaker.

It's a handicap in terms of getting my attention, but I do check them out if it seems they have an interesting premise/writing/fetishes/gameplay. But yeah, you do need gameplay, and a good amount of it. I don't have much patience for reading walls of text at the best of times. Corrupted Saviors has the right idea with its gameplay-driven corruption, and it's one of my fav ero-games despite being literally text on a black background.

Well, Fenoxo is doing well with his mostly text-based games, using just a few minor sprite images for his character, so in term of validity, it totally is. You're going to be judge harsher for the writing and the gameplay though.

Nearly all the best games I've played on this site have been text-based. Probably because they focus more on gameplay.

You know, I was honestly debating this a bit earlier with myself. Or at the very least pondering it.

I think if someone didn't really know how to draw, wasn't comfortable just slapping some random 3D models together in whatever software they can get their hands on, but was totally okay with putting their smut into a block of descriptive text instead, then I think that's just admirable right there.

It's not gonna be as flashy, but hey if it gets traction, least your writing and presentation is proving itself.

I really like them, if they have the gameplay to back them up. Those text games that are basically just visual novels/choose your own adventure stories without images or stolen porn images I can't get into.

The virtues of a text based game is able to do things that would be a lot harder to achieve if you use visuals. Writing a few lines of text is a lot faster than sourcing models, posing, and rendering one image after all. It allows creators to make and a lot more varied content and situations, and focus more on gameplay.
My main issue with a lot of them is that they all seem to cater to very niche and specific fetishes(especially transformation and furry stuff), so I have a surprisingly hard time finding games I can actually play and enjoy. Especially since the gameplay oriented ones tends to get drowned out by the story ones.

I heard that some of text based games are okay with some people.. so I'm curious about it.. what are your thoughts about it?
Yes, the text games are OK.
In my opinion, a lot depends on an interesting story and the possibility of choices.
If the story is engaging, the design can lag behind.
If the game is just beautifully designed, but it doesn't grab me, I won't be able to spend a long time with it.

My thoughts.

The vast majority of text based games are just shit.
Not because there text based but because they dont got gameplay.
Same reason visual novels are shit.

There are a few good text based games.
Free cities come to mind tho that is like comparing a normal car to a ferrari.

Incubus city is nice.

Eriko(or something like that) is also nice tho the combat system confuses the hell out of me.

But the majority.
There just visual novals without even having the excuees of pretty pictures.
