Can someone tell me how i can cut this asset in different pieces?
For the story i really would use a staircase. This is a free asset from .

The minimum i need is one side the be removable.
Importing works fine, as far as i can tell. But this is the first time that i am actually looking into working with some obj asset.

Ideally, the side with the door would go off.

Thanks. Guide recommendation would be great.

Generally :
Select geometry tool>Tool setting pane>Hide unwanted polys in face group (faces you selected are highlighted in red, you can use surface group too)
Once done left click on viewport : Geometry editing>Delete Hidden polygons
It gonna work for simple things & quick edit.
For more clean & complex editing most basic fonction of any modeler should do it.

Yes, i hope what i am planning to do is basic. Besides adding some other surface to it but it will be mainly intact as it is. Just need to get rid of one side.

Thanks, i will put in reality now. :)

Though i need to play with it since i want to apply different shaders like the floor, the rails...

p.s. thanks for the tip though i am dense.
Why? Because i realized there is already one side missing ... lol. For the future i know at least how to do it.

Do you know how do that with the geometry editor?
No, have to figure it out.
Will be challenging but i really like the stairs. There are non i could find for DAZ. I assume it will be a long road before i have the stairs the way i like to see them.
Have to research or google.

It's possible, never really used geometry editor for that tho.

Here a cube exemple

Select geometry editor>select few polys, create surface from selected :

Thank you. This will make it possible to make it appear the way i imagine it.
Now it's time to put it into use. It may be a little daunting especially with the rails in mind but it will be rewarding.

Plus, there are so many free assets you can use. Just takes longer to use them.

You shrink/expand your selection with ctrl + and ctrl -

That being said, long time ago I went (too) hard with the geometry editor to the point I corrupted the mesh (iirc symptoms are flicking textures and wonky polys in the viewport). Nasty thing is you don't really see how and when it became corrupt and there is no coming back. It just happened once in years, but still.

Tbh if you intend to really do some heavy mesh edit, it's probably better to install a modeler that it is the job (Blender is free, and there is pirated version of Maya, Zbrush or whatever). Slicing a mesh is super easy and a good opportunity to jump in another software.

Oh yes. Blender.
It's laying on my drive pretty dormant. I think i will do that.
I am not even sure if i ever release anything but just for the time being, i really like to use assets that are not widely used. This looks really nice and we all know the EuroApartment. So i just create my own version of it. Junk status.
In any case, there is a lot to be learned. And the setting up is a lengthy thing.
Lighting and all, environment and this staircase just fit. Maybe a little too modern but that's ok.
Even if i never finish it it will still be a learning experience and it will get me a better perspective of how to make things happen.

Thanks for sharing.

If you intend to exploit you game commercially, always check the licensing that comes with stuff you use.

Turbosquid 11.b:No Obscene or Unlawful Use. You may NOT use 3D Models for any defamatory, harassing, pornographic, obscene, or racist purpose, or to infringe any party’s Depicted Intellectual Property rights.

I doubt anyone will be coming for you for a free stair asset in an obscure porn game tbh. I mean I get the need to be 'legally' clean - but a bit of common sense there tho.

Lol.. very true and thanks for pointing that out. Spin256. Though i agree with no__name i doubt it as well. After all it's free and i am not even sure if i ever release anything.
Has someone ever been caught using assets at all? I have a feeling that most games use assets not paid but that is just my feeling.
Which reminds me so much about the Amiga days when only a small fraction every bought anything, besides hardware. DAZ seems to be the same.

Anyway, i wished DAZ store had something like that but it seems they don't. So i have to use assets like these and it looks quite nice actually. Though i will check the licenses more carefully just to check what you can do "legally".
I won't release anything anyway in a commercial way. So that should be fine then.

Many creators crosspost models on CGTrader, which afaik has no restrictions like that. So if it's on CGTrader it's probably fine.

I was just pointing out the license as it seemed you were advising others there were lots of free assets they could use.

The chances of getting caught might well be slim, but that's for each individual to make their own choice. It may seem fine to use 3d models without checking the license, and then get sloppy and use a music track or something. Just be aware of it, and make your own decision.

I have seen people get caught out where they build up a library of these sorts of free assets and then get a job at a games company or cgi studio and use said assets.

You're right, CGTrader doesn't have have the porn restriction. Although CGTrader's license is longer than TurboSquid

Both sites have the Editorial usage restriction for some models. So it's always best to understand what you're doing.

I think this is the problem.
Just reading the licenses is already daunting and to understand them even more.

If you don't pursue a commercial route, shouldn't it be ok?
Some assets are easy to spot, other not so much.

These assets seem to be free to use them. Restrictions always apply of course.
I have to check CGTrader but just looking at their licenses. Let's just say, it's a lot of reading.

man I was about to render that stairway then I read the ToS
what to do? Scary stuff.
Jest.

Well, Turbosqash really has a clause in their how the asset can be used.
CGTrader on the other hand has not. Only what can be uploaded. So i'll guess it's ok to use their stuff any way you want.

Oh dear. They goes my staircase. :(

I didn't think of a policy. All the mattered was the asset.
But of course. Though, i'll guess times change and everyone is more careful. I can not imagine that the site would scan games. The only way that could happen if someone reports it. And even then, it's quite remote.
But since we buy everything we can sleep really good. Don't we.

I may build my own in blender. How hard can that be. That way, i am avoiding any remote problems. Though maybe Blender has some different opinion about that.
