What do you think about backgrounds in AVN? How important is their role in games of this genre? What examples of games with good backgrounds you can show?

For me personally, having a good background in the game is an integral element of immersion in the story and giving it the effect of realism. In many ways, its presence means the author's attitude to his game, the degree of his professionalism and willingness to spend considerable resources on its creation. The pinnacle of working out the backdrops for me is a party in BADIK`s dorm at ep 8, where every room was worked out and detailed at an incredible level. From the other games close to this level of background detail, i can add the Summer Heat and Summer`s Gone. There are also good backgrounds in AWAM and Timestamps. As an example of how not to do - Inceton games that there are absolutely empty locations as if he copied and pasted the first background he came across.

Well, I don't want to disappoint you, but for most of those games, the goods as well as the bads, it's just the default setting for the room used. There's not much creators who take the times to effectively works on their rooms in order to make them unique ; and this is partly due to the fact that there not much room that permit it without a lot of works.

That's the one thing that even in japanese games you see being reused often.

Environments and backgrounds are probably amongst the lowest priority of anything for VNs/RPGMs, as long as they match with the story you want to tell and are consistent points of reference to know where you are they are already doing their jobs.

I'm not quite sure that's the case. I have almost no idea about the development process and the corresponding programs, but comparing a game like AWAM from a player side, where easily recognizable standard assets are used for dozens of other games, the level of development work there is much higher. And as far as I understand, assets alone are not enough, there should be work with light, posing characters, and so on. Standard and unchanged (bad) can be called the game Summer with Mia and other games of this developer, it was thanks to him that I began to pay attention to this detail. And this author had the resources to create normal background, like in BASIC, which, as you claim, were standard, but he didn't do it and it looks terrible.

In general, I am talking about AVN precisely as a work of art, such as books, games and films, where the elaborated world, both from the point of view of history and graphics is the basis, not a secondary factor (or not necessary at all), and the porn part is just an addition. It seems to me that due to the presence of the above factors, porn parody are extremely popular with many players and do not require much effort from developers. Maybe you're right, and things like the background don't make sense for most players, but in this case there are a lot of classic porn with and without a plot and the meaning of these VN disappears, since they don't give anything new, no zest, especially considering that most are kinetic.

I assume it takes a lot of work and talent to create really unique and well-done backgrounds, so I'm fine with the standard ones no matter how often they appear. Certainly I prefer that to amateurish backgrounds just for the sake of being unique.

Really, the only case where background was really memorable was one game where digitally manipulated photos were used. It was a decent effort and I admire the dev for breaking the mold, but when it came down to it, it just felt "off".
