Hi guys, first time here. I'm a software developer working with common web/mobile apps and I'm interested to learn how to make some VN games using renpy. I think I'm able to learn by myself these development tools, but I don't totally understand the art area so I want to learn more on that because I think is one of the big parts of the games I want to have.

From what I could gather I can use daz 3d to create some nice shots, animations etc, I already have used a bit on the tutorials. But I want to confirm what should I pursue on the matter to create some custom content. Like, if I want to make a custom character with a different look, different clothes, that I don't want to buy or are not available somewhere. Would that be a software like blender? What else is free to use that has good popularity?

Thank you

Blender
3dsmax
Maya

All have pros and cons, the latter two being a bit easier to get your head around, blender is free.

If you want to make porn games use DAZ

If you want to model stuff, see you next year :D

All three of those programs have a massive learning curve, knowing how to use one is fantastic, needing to know how to is not a necessity by any means. I Use 3dsmax occasionally, but I have been using that for 10 years before I even heard of DAZ. The main reason I don't use it more often is because the work flow between DAZ and blender is easier so I do simple things in blender, which is lucky as I only know the simple things with it.

If wanted a career in 3d modelling Maya is the industry standard, if you want a hobby Blender is fine, I have no idea what 3dsmax is preferred for now days, 10 years ago it used for gaming assests.

Blender will do your head in sometimes but its the one to learn with.

Thank you for you answer. I will be doing some courses in blender then and see how much far I can go. I'm not in a rush, looks fun.

Ill give you and any other casual reader a tip on learning 3d modelling - Don't delve into a 3 hours in depth beginner tutorial straight away. Find a blender tut on making a chair or something, learn a few basic things and get result in an afternoon, not be paused on 30 minutes in a 3 hour tut cos you got hungry and thought fuck it, ill do it later, you never will, or forget half of it anyway.

Then look at other in depth tuts.

If your a total beginner I would start with this tutorial . Its fairly long, but its split into 15-20 min parts. Its extremely detailed from the basic stuff like how to move around/zoom in/out, to modelling, rendering, etc.
