VN - Ren'Py - Being a DIK [v0.11.1] [DrPinkCake]

This is one of the best adult games I’ve played. I like it because it is definitely not a classic porn game, but it feels more like a game with some porn in it, as it’s not forced or rushed. The blending of free roam mode with VN mode is pretty effectively done, the flow of the game is impressive, and the paths are numerous.

Each episode is pretty long and features lots of characters, opportunities, and mini-games, which are not confusing.

The models are great, the animations even better, there are plenty of in-game sound effects and music that help you get into the story, the writing is detailed and filled with humor, and the consistency is spotless.

Still, there is one tiny little thing to add now that I’ve played through all of the episodes. With time, it gets a bit tedious to play the mini-games, but they can be disabled before starting each episode. For some players, there could be too much “grind” from time to time. I didn’t mind it, but there are some instances in free roam or similar situations where it is not clear where to go and what exactly to do even though there is a quest list.

All in all, this game makes it to the top ones I’ve played.

BEING A DIK REVIEW

This is the first adult game I have ever played, and I am happy it was, because it was a great introduction to the world of VNs.
It is very immersive, and the character development is amazing. Everything is very well written, and you can see that the developers paid a lot of attention to details.
I will be reviewing the game in the three following sections:
1) The content
The main plot revolves around a college guy from a low-income family. He is a likeable character, and the girls like him too. Once he gets into college, he pairs up with Derek, and they have to complete a series of challenges to be able to get into the DIK fraternity. The girls in the game are varied, both personality-wise and appearance-wise, but I especially liked Jill and Josy.
It's a pretty fun game with witty writing and many different paths.
2) The visuals
This game features beautiful DAZ models and average-looking environments. There's nothing special about the environments, but everything fits so well into the whole college theme.
The animations are also great, and I actually like that this game isn't your average fuck-fest.
3) The playability
With the main story, you can engage in different 'side quests' and your decisions influence the further development of the story. There are numerous paths, and the branching seamlessly merges with the core story.

It is one of the most popular VNs on this site, on Steam, in general, i think well deserved, I read that many people criticize the writing, the script and the plot in general of the story, and it seems to me that at a certain point they are right, but it does not enhance the level of direction, lighting and good rhythm that this VN has, the level of details when making a decision, changes in character dialogues, attitude, even clothing, I have more positive points to give to this VN, but well if you want to read only positive things you have more than 1000 reviews to delight you.

Now, why after so much cock riding do I give it a 3 (average)?,
simple, the story (script, plot, etc), For example, after two seasons, I still don't know who stole the guitar in episode 1, who gave the photos to Chad, where does the whole story go with drugs and prostitution?,
The big problem with this VN is that the MC is not the protagonist of the main plot, he is only the protagonist of the dramas of the women that surround him.

The script doesn't take it seriously, the story doesn't have a beginning and an end, there are many open sub plots, for example Maya's with her dad, Tommy and Quinn (the drugs, protitutions, etc), Jill and his sister, Isabella and her missing husband, etc, etc, etc.

In short, what bothers me the most is what I said before, the main plot, does not take into account the protagonist, which they referred to me as the main plot, everything related to Vinny, Tommy, drugs, the important decisions within the universe of DIK, have to remind Pink Cake that the protagonist is that, the center of the story, two seasons have already passed and it only adds more ridiculous dramas and many cliches taken from movies from the 90s and early 2000s, that is another criticism, the absolute lack of originality, everything is a copy of some corny movie from the 80's or 90's.

I have more criticisms and more positive things to say about this VN, but the truth is that burning neurons in this is not worth it, it is the best VN there, no, but it is the most digestible, Pink Cake's work is constant and always gives a quality product, You can tell that he really likes what he does and his success comes from what I already said, perseverance, passion and a quality product (which is not original, the story is somewhat null, and the MC is very flat, etc.)

GOAT. Best characters of any game ive ever played. The emotional connection is just incredible and this is one of the few games that ive replayed. Josy is the best. Art quality and animation is fantastic after episode 4, but it is still very good for eps 1-4. Story is interesting. Minigames are very fun and creative. The chioce of music is brilliant, it all just fits and adds to the overall atmosphere of the game. Just everything about this game is honestly perfect. 10/10

Who is this game for?
For people who enjoy interesting college story with humorous elements. While you need to make different choices to get different girls, this game is still harem at its core. So if you enjoy MC with big dick that gets a bunch of girls, this one is for you.

I loved this game awhile back. But honestly now I don't really care for it. I don't understand why the game was acting like it's okay to constantly hook up with whoever you want in the beginning. But out of nowhere the mc just randomly grows a conscious and decides he will no longer do that. It just felt out of left field.

Also I absolutely hate sandbox games so this game making me waste 30 minutes just trying to find a single freaking room really annoys me.

I'd be fine with the game making me choose who to be with although I liked the original harem feel. If the game would just remove the sandbox mode and just keep it the standard vn feel the rest of the game has.

This is definitely the best adult game that i've ever played.

I love everything about this game. It's just an all around banger.

I've been replaying this game, because i keep hearing how good it is and it's high rating. Last time i quit because the protagonist gets humilliated by having to strip naked and couldn't find a place to stay with anyone and has to stay outside in the cold or something. It was something ridiculous like that in the story. And upon replaying it, i don't even think i can play up to that moment.

The start is pretty decent, easing us into things. There's even a surprising little story about almost getting with someone and then finding out she has a boyfriend, which eases you into "moving on" with your life and starting the visual novel proper, in college.

Then immediately i run into something that annoys me. You run into an unrealistically annoying roommate, and you have to act like a pussy and take it. The protagonist looks to the player as unlikeable and annoying at this moment.

Then when you get to college you meet one of the main girls, who has a boyfriend. Oh, ok... And then you meet another main girl, and she has a boyfriend too! C'mon, this is just ridiculous.

Then the writing gets annoying again, and you get bullied and literally wedgied (even though you know martial arts, and you're a fucking adult) and you do nothing. This is bad writing with an unlikeable annoying pussy protagonist. Yet this is supposedly a legendary Adult Visual Novel. And later on in the story of course, you get the ridiculous scene i described in the beginning of this review.

This is a heavily overrated AVN, just like Milfy City, and i just can't stand to play it any longer because of the protagonist and the writing.

You know the feeling I have with this game it's very strange I mean it's not a bad game but once you play more games in this world you realize it's not the best game ever I mean this is the perfect thing for those tourists who are starting in the world of avns or for the normie and mainstream public, and I'm not saying it to insult, it's just that its the only way I can understand the high reviews, and is that this game has hot girls, hot renders, vanilla sex scenes for everyone to like, no strong taboos and decent writing to some extent, and it's a point I must give to dr pink cake, he created the perfect f*cking game for mainstream audiences ! It is truly an achievement and something that no one can take away from him, but the problems come later and let's make it clear that this is all my personal opinion........


THIS GAME IS F*CKING DULL, although it starts well with the progress of the seasons it becomes boring, melodramatic, mc is dull and a pussy, repetitive and bad jokes, boring sex scenes, moralistic speeches that nobody f*cking cares about, and the worst It is the subplot of the sl*t with the cuthair of a lesbian whose name I forgot, that jumped the shark a long time ago, all this game is like a very mediocre soap opera, a game that to my liking stayed very much in 2019 and that has nothing interesting to offer, in my opinion today there are better games than this and that deserve more attention, but what can be done huh.

Very cool! I like this game. There are a lot of gorgeous women and an interesting male story in this game. I have played this game 2 times. And I think I'll play it again. I hope there will be a sequel soon and it will be very interesting.

So, turns out I've been playing this game for years and completely forgot to post a review of it ! This review will therefore be of [v0.9.1].

There's much to say but I'll try to keep it as brief as possible.

To me, Being a DIK is kind of weird in a sense as it feels more like a game with porn in it rather than a porn game.

Yes there's lots and lots of sexy content in the game but the production value is so above the industry standard that it kind of created a category of its own in my opinion.

The music is really good, the renders are really good, the characters and writing are really... You get the point. Almost everything about the game is top notch, and even the minigames which were one of the only weak aspects of the game are apparently under heavy rework to make them better.

All of this becomes even more impressive when you learn that it comes from one man working alone !

There are some concerns though, the recent branching of the story, while a great idea, means that developpment time has become a tad extreme. We've gone from 2/3 updates a year to one big update per year. It was expected but I do worry that it takes a toll on the developper.
If you happen to read this review when the full game has come out then hey, congrats you lucky bastard !!

There's much to say but I feel like it's better to play this game than to read about it so I'll stop there.

Everyone that plays AVN's and use this forum will know about and probably have already played this game. And its not surprising, this game is great. 5 stars for sure. One of the best in the genre, no doubt. All of its qualities are easy to find in 99% of the other reviews, be it the graphics or writing, character personalities, whatever it is, Its already mentioned by many.

I want to talk about its flaws. As I said, its still a 5 star game, but its not perfect.

First point of discussion to me is how utterly boring is the MC. And hey, I get it, blank slate MC that should help you shape your playthrough to your liking, maybe self-insert your personality and beliefs? Sure, lots of games opt to go that route. For me that would be fine, exept I cant choose not to be extremely dull, a drama-queen and/or dumb as fuck.

Social studies? Don't know what that means. Yuck.
Did your mother never told you not to be a creep and steal underwear from a girls dorm? Well AKSHUALLY, my mom is dEAd. Hm, yes, that changes things.-Said the almost 40 years wold teacher, obviously (Ugh).

Seriously, the game is full of things like that, that to me are just unbelieavable cringy and just stupid. Which brings me to my next point:

The story.

Now, the writing isn't bad. Grammatically, the English is pretty much perfect, all well proof-read, and the majority of the dialogue feels natural, specially in the unremarkable parts of day-to-day and life in general.


As for plot plot, I could go on and on about some... let's say leaps of logic in the main hooks presented to us as the player, specially in regard to the main LI's, but its probably for the best for that to be left as it usually is: the game is made to be more lighthearted, American Pie inspired, and that's fine. It works, and personally, as long as it keeps being recognized as that, I'm fine.
That argument and line of thought, however, weakens when it comes to the logic applied in the every-day situations that occur throughout the game.

The problems begin, for me, in some of those situations, in examples such as I listed above, where obviously a 19 year old, in COLLEGE, is excused of stealing underwear because his mother is dead, and without a mother to tell you how creepy and/or wrong that is, it's obviously not that big of a deal and you are free to forgo social rules and decency. That logic, coming from an almost 40 years old teacher, who is portrayed as this cold, logical and serious person, exemplifies perfectly for me, how mediocre some portions of the plot/writing are.

With all that out of my chest, playing the game is still very much worth it, and I think it will always be, considering the quality of the vast majority of its competitors.

The last note I guess is that if you play this merely for the sex, as a porn alternatie, and not for the story, everything said above can be ignored. The animations are great, altough the writing is not particulary erotic or inspired in the sex scenes.

Having finished episode 8 (and therefore, the second season), I feel the need to review this audiovisual experience.
It has been a long time since a visual novel (especially those that are simply considered "to masturbate"), did not make me fall in love with it so much.

If I say that, when at a certain moment, you are forced to choose a single route, I practically shed some tears. You realize that in this game there really are complex decisions, but above all, that your decisions really matter, and that you have to take it seriously.
At that moment my mind simply told me "write the review".

The characters are wonderful, and I personally stuck with Sage, but I had a hard time not being able to stick with Isabella.
I'm usually a play once and don't come back kind of guy in video games , but I find myself needing to see the other routes.
What interests me is not so much the route itself but the relationship between MC and the other characters, because everything is so well put together, so well calculated ... that I think it is perfectly one of those novels that make me think that you can really make works of the genre (like Fate/stay night) that are important and valuable in the medium of video games and not simply to be considered as the typical game to masturbate and that's it.

From my humble opinion, I absolutely thank the creator of this videogame, Dr PinkCake, for making an experience with such a great choral cast that I haven't had a good time with in such a long time: since the Mass Effect trilogy.

I think it's a game that even though it may have more objective or subjective flaws (the tests don't convince me), I think everything else does so well that I consider it an absolutely rewarding experience.

Graphically it is top; theme music and there are songs that are engraved in your head.
The issue of adding voices, and is more personal, I think that although I would like to have, I do not think it was something urgent and maybe if they decide to implement it, I would leave it for almost final versions.
In short, this game succeeds in many things and I think that where it succeeds the most is in achieving that, although there are characters that you don't like, most of them you see them and say: maybe I don't like him, but he is very well written.

And that said, I'm going to continue playing. Now it's time for the interlude and to continue with episode 9.

Damn, this game by far has the best story of all. The first time I started it I shut it down after 5 minutes when I figured it's this typical college stuff, but I gave it a second chance and I am very happy I did. It's like I'd almost even play it without all the adult stuff, but somehow this game is just the best of both worlds.

Seriously though - the game is sublime; plot, humor, drama, music, visuals, atmosphere and of course - the sex scenes, are glorious.
The writing brings the characters to life.
Dr.PinkCake, you dirty, filthy genius - you have my respect.

This is the best game of the genre. There is little doubt in this regard. Clearly the author likes to experiment, this is why the game itself feels like a polygon for development multiple games afterwards as part of a franchise.

What makes this game stand out are obviously the superior visuals. The models are amazing, the characters have personalities and their behaviour seems very authentic in-line with their character. Obviously this is an erotic game, therefore the female behaviour is overly promiscuous, but it doesn't feel as plasticky as with other games.

Another incredible aspect are the mini-games, which are simply wowza. Except for the drawing game, where it seems nearly impossible to hit S-tier without specialised software, the games feel great. There are 3 types of mini-games - mechanic based (brawler, shots, painting, drawing), logic based (math and English tests, tiles, puzzle) and, the best ones, strategies (mansion quest, party quest). Especially the strategies are incredible and feel like a game inside a game and the concept is very promising (I almost felt sorry when the mansion quest ended, I wonder what possibilities would there be to make it ongoing).

As for the gameplay - the branching is simply amazing. There are many paths. If anything, there are too many paths, which can probably be the only thing close to criticism. Having way too many paths significantly complicates developing the updates and I foresee that the game will either die due to developer's fatigue, or will end abruptly in a season or two.

It's impressive how the flow of the game is structured. Basically the main story is simply used to connect the free roams between them and most of the time will be spent during the free roams. This makes the game incredibly engaging and the Interlude showed best how this game compares to the other RenPy competitors (the Interlude is very similar to the competitors and felt like a stop-gap filler for the game).

Last, but not least - the music is amazing. I kept launching the game in the background simply to listen to the in-game music (it's that good).

To conclude - this game needs to be experienced. At times I almost feel sorry this is an erotic game and guilty because I like it so much. I almost feel like it would be an amazing standalone game without all the sex scenes. Highly recommend and wish all the best to the game author!

Must have game. Excellent renders. Excellent story. There is romance, comedy, action with mini games, and lots of activities with all the women in the game. You have 3 paths to take though and each will lead you to different parts of the story and different women. That means there are lot of replayability to this game.
