I killed rascal and the ugly monster rabbit boss.

I got 2 dream souls when I deposited the 2 fairy tales.

Each soul is supposed to level me up 5 times right?

I just consumed a soul and only got 1 level?

Did you get game here? It was translated, and screenshot looks like it wasn't. Could it be something modded/corrupted or something?

Don't think it's modded but I'm sure missing some stuff here and there for some reason and my souls don't work correctly.

EDIT: Figured the issue. Mine was pretty old so the dream soul changes wasn't reflected. Oh well.

Because the english version is up to date. If you don't want to play in english for some reason then whatever. Does yours even have the dlcs? Mermaid voice is pretty low on the item list, among the dlc 2 items so that's probably when it was added. DLC 2 is the door in the prison on the right side. You can check for dlc 1 and 3 in the room of reminiscence (gallery). If you have dlc 1 there'll be spots for Kuti (you can press Z on the spots for hints on how to get a scene, watch out for spoilers). If you have dlc 3, there'll be snake next to furry near the entrance.
If you are missing any of those, then your game is out of date. The dlcs are essentially free major updates to the game so there is no reason not to have them. I don't think you can even get the game officially without them included.

You'd be more efficient by sacrificing souls to the cunning White Rabbit at first, since until you get at least level 25, level ups are pretty much cheap.
Better use Dream Souls when levels are harder to get.
Hmm... I don't remember how much souls they give if you sell them though, perhaps selling them at first is more efficient too, though it is up to you to figure that out.

Yes it has all DLCs. Unless somewhere on some site are lurking old versions you will have a harder time finding the game withouth the additional content.

I actually heard the story is good hence I picked this. However, I heard this isn't an official localization and that the tl is edited MTL. If I can read the actual text, I'll do so, nothing against whoever who did the TLs of course as I know how hard is it. It's just that being an actual freelance translator have provided me insights on how bad some TLs are, and those I've seen even comes from professionals in the industry I am working in.

I don't actually want to compromise the quality of the story with any forms of MTL hence even if it's something old, so long the main story aspect remains the same, that's good enough for me, for now. I'll pick it up proper with the DLCs for their story later on when I can I guess but I'll make do with what I have now.

The version here is the official translation though, and it's a very good translation.

Though even very good translation may have its own hiccups.
I don't remember details, but... when you encounter Red Hood near the Lutwidge Town, Holmes shouldn't say anything about crawling little girls when your Sen is low, it's a mistake, though quite ironic in my opinion.
Also some item descriptions may be different from the original and mean something else.
There are spoilers, so ignoring them is wise.

Then you have nothing to worry about because the old translation was made by people and not MTL`d.
BlackSouls1-2 have both good translations.
If you are scared about a Waatividya situation ala DarkSouls then you dont have to worry at all.
It is easier to pick up the speech connection in japanese between Mabel-MarySue
Or MarySue-Jabberwock because of how they end it. Or even in BS1 for ending D the pattern is there for native japanese speakers.
But even then the english translations makes a effort to provide hints to these connections.
There are only very minor differences between certain fairy tales. A. o. how japanese vs western audiences understand it.

Its way waaaay more likely you will not understand or miss stuff if you never seen the shows or games Toro references constantly. From Touhou to a niche fanservice show with a very violent angel as a example.

Not a sidejab or anything but you sorta inflict self-sabotage by intentionally playing a possible version of the game that doesnt have the full content/DLC1-3.
Dont let fear cloud or overshadow your mind. Wether you like BS at the end of the day or not. Dont let paranoia take you.

That being said, how do you see what DLC you have? I got the chaos dungeon which should be DLC 2 mentioned and I saw this snake god(?) that allows you to tone down the jump scare stuff. Is that DLC 3 stuff? If it is, what's the indicator for DLC 1?

DLC 1 should be Deep Sea area.

If you have dlc 3, you probably have dlc 1. I don't think it's possible not to. You could check the scenes on the ground there and see if one of them mentions kuti, should be the second group of 4 from the bottom on the left side.

I'd suggest playing and getting a couple of endings. Once you get stuck without clue of what to do, try Chaos Dungeon and farm for weapons, items and souls.

Was there ever any kind of difficulty or challenge mode mod made for this game? It is fairly well balanced but also feels like the line between an impossible boss and a pushover is way too thin at times.
