VN - Ren'Py - Broken Promises [v0.34] [Light Cavalry]

I played v0.34; apart from a few logics, the game is actually pretty good. There is a nice variety in LIs, which are a class apart from regular AVNs. Go for it!

The plot is a little silly but makes up for it with beautiful renders and girls that have compelling stories behind the masks they put up. If you like crime-drama shows you'll love this premise and I think it is unique in its own right.

Give it a try if you appreciate quality slow-burns like SG and you'll have fun.

Full disclosure even though English is the only language I understand. I do have issues noticing bad writing or grammar in these games.

• Story

This game is a story focused game first, so because of that there aren't any lewd scenes yet. But there is some lewd content just not of it. The story is part mystery that isn’t yet revealed and the other half there is a clear objective. Now depending how sensitive you are to realism to certain aspects this might be something that bothers you as well with this title.

The MC is a undercover cop I have no clue if how this portrayed so far in the game Is it too unrealistic or not. There is one character I question how they are a cop in this game however because it seems they were an addict and potentially shot someone in the past.

• Renders

Normally renderings aren't something I judge or talk about in these games as it’s very subjective if you like them or not. But I felt the need to mention there were times where I thought the renders were really good above average for sure.

• Characters

Some may or may not like this part of the game. Because it can be a bit ridiculous when it’s used up in other games or any type of entertainment. But it seems for the most part all the characters are connected to one another in some shape or form without realizing. This aspect kind of bugged me at times. Because while I understand it made no sense for the MC to blow his cover since he is undercover. I found myself wanting the MC to tell a certain character to reveal who he really is since they knew each other in the past .

Every character seems to have gone through or is going through some kind of trauma. While I do like this troupe. I’ve been seeing it more and more lately, so it isn’t as refreshing as it used to be for me.

As far as the LI goes, I like all of them equally. This is probably one of rare games I can say I think I might actually like the milf character the most, a bit unsure at the moment but I do like her quite a bit. Though it helps that the MC is about the same age as her. Then there is the childhood friend. She remains a complete mystery as of now but I can’t help but to be scared for her as I want to like her the most so far despite not knowing enough about her. But I fear something bad is going to happen to her or she is going to end up being unlikeable once she reveals things to the character despite having good intentions.

• Additional Info

Some have issues with the writing or grammar, I can't comment on that aspect of this game as I stated above I do have issues noticing bad writing or grammar. But I did notice there were misspellings from time to time not that often but it was present.

This game has made it into my top 5 List, cant wait to see more

Excellent Game! It has a lot of potential the story building, the characters and the plot, the union of all this is perfect. Hope it will get better and better in the future. Keep up the good work dev.

this is really a strange one to review, as you can not review the original and rework separately, so I will have just give this my best shot.

first of the original 0.1 game (before rework) was a solid 4 stars almost 5, in fact the only bad thing with the original 0.1 was the annoying intro and outro, there was no need for that, the game othwerwise was perfect, great renders, great story, great back story to the characters especially Grace.

then we got th 0.1.1 and the devs decided t destroy grace and ruin her back story, it still had the annoying intro and outro, but now due to changing game, game is at best a 2 star, maybe a 3 at a push.

then for some dumb reason (probably just to cream more money from patreons) the whole game was reworked, we got the new reworked chapter 1, and wtf? the writing is horrible, the dev here should have really kept with the old version, because this new version is complete and utter trash, and gets less than 0 stars.

this game started as a 4 maybe even 5 star game, then the dev decided to slowly destroy the game, and make it worse, funny thing here is the word slowly, because this game is really slow to update, I understand it is only one person making it, but many many other VN have only one dev making it, and they come out far quicker, and far better than this steaming pile of shit. BUT this game is not beyond salvage just yet, all the dev has to do, is go BACK to the ORIGINAL 0.1 game, with Grace's original back story, which was almost perfect, drop the stupid intro and outro, then it would be perfect, and carry on from there, to do any less than that, is pointless and at that point the dev may as well abandon this lost cause.

Still early days on this one... sorta. Scares me that there have been two updates in a year and a half. Really more of a 4.5* but rounding it down due to slowish updates. That said, some of the slowness here is apparantly due to a revamp of chapter 1. So is that maybe 3 updates in a year and a half? Anyways...

Renders are quite nice. The girls are lovely in a real world sorta way. There's thiccness there in a cute realistic way. No lewds yet in the revamped chapters, so keep the slow burn in mind here. Music and Sound effects are... mostly nonexistent. Same with animations. Those things dont bother me, but many seem to think AVNs cant be good without them.

The story makes sense for the most part. Some things are a bit unrealistic, but we'll see how things go in future updates. The MC seems actually quite likable, not a beta pushover type, so if the magic dick syndrome comes into play later, it'll make more sense than in other AVNs.

Really, its quite a good effort here with room to improve. Gonna keep an eye out on it in the hopeful eventuality of a better update schedule.

Broken Promises [ch.2 Rework]

When the demo of this first came out I was pretty much excited because I loved the demo. But the first version of this one got my hopes down. Because writing was dull, and that teacher annoyed me she fastly fallen for MC's cock. And I was bored with this one.

But after the rework I loved it. Now the teacher was not there. And story got more clarification and got more interesting. Renders and models are good. I'm always into story driven VN's with good romance and this one got my pass. Overall I loved the game. Keep up the good work dev looking forward to next updates.

Pros:
1) Great renders
2)Girls with personalities, and assets
3) A well thought out story from the scratch. These VNs always end up being impactful and "watching porn for the plot" type. Good renders and great story is a great recipe for VN success.

its a story about an undercover agent, that is all it is unfortunately, the choices are subpar without any real impact, and the undercover story is very shallow, its like saying "this is an underwater adventure" and going 1 a few inches underwater, the undercover plot is very and i say VERY shallow, there are no moral choices and everything feels generic and average at its highest point, and the fact that the MC avoids relationships just to... avoid relationship? i understand keeping the game about the plot... when the plot is actually above average...

I dont really get the mediocre rating this game has right now. Maybe its because this is a rework and an earlier version of this game was not good idk. But as for the game right now (Ch. 1 Rework) all you can say is that the looks of this game are out of this world. Just judging on the renders so far this is one of the best looking games there are right now.

As for the Story there isnt much to talk about, all you can say is that there could be potential in the story, but youll have to wait and see how it plays out further. If the Characters get unique personalitys with interesting storylines i can see this becoming an awesome game, so because of that i think it really deserves a high rating.

I played the game before and after the rework and I can say that it is now much better than before. The story is more cohesive, realistic and mature.

Visually not much has changed, the game is still beautiful. The girls are gorgeous and hot.

It's still early to talk about the story and the characters, but so far what has been delivered is enough to keep us hooked and waiting for more.

Let's wait and see what's ahead, but from what we have so far, it deserves 5 stars.

The game (renders) looks very good (though the earlier versions looked better in my opinion), but for a game that says that the major emphasis will be on the story, the story is extremely bad. The characters work way too hard to sell the opinion that this is a serious VN but ultimately fail miserably looking like idealistic dumb teenagers. They are shallow token archetype personalities you can find in basically any other VNs on this site. The story seems like an awkward and messy amalgamation of multiple different genres patched together by a very weak script. The devs need to find a decent writer cause each successive release is worse than the last.

I was almost going to pass up on this game because of the low rating but luckily i didn't. Interesting start of the story with good looking women.

As for now (version 0.1 reworked) there is not enough gameplay to say anything else about the game, but it definitly deserve more attention and a higher rating.

Broken Promises has undergone a third (?!) attempt at being rewritten following the firing of the team that brought the visual novel into the limelight. I still have hope that the story will pan out and the author will get credit for a great comeback. However, there are some glaring problems that need to be addressed in this revamped "fix."

What was once an elevated story with deep character development is now a mutilated mess. The new, weakened, meandering story is no doubt the combination of poor writing, lack of vision, and herd mentality. While all of the characters suffer from a lack of depth and dimension, the female love interests are devoid of personality and any likable traits other than attraction. That attractiveness wears thin quickly when even a simple introduction conversation is painful to get through. No doubt in response to the herd claiming the women fall for the MC too easily, the new love interests are written like a gathering of feminazis in an insanely uptight, ultra-butch lesbian bar. "How dare you look in the direction of my breasts?! Man pig!"

The previous version had an uncommon maturity and honesty that pulled the reader into instantly loving the characters for their weaknesses and struggles they faced. Alice's crush and clumsy attempts at handling her affection made her heartwarming and endearing. Alfina's traumatic past coupled with her defiant insistence on the MC not being her type made readers intrigued and excited to test her. Kiley's distrust of strangers and swift tongue made her a challenge worth committing to. My personal favorite, Grace, struggled with feelings of worthlessness and undeserving of being loved. Above all the others, it was her character that I connected with and looked forward to seeing grow.

What was once a touching, introspective glance into the complicated relationship between the police chief and her detective, ends up being an awkward middle school dance with your mom. Though this moment was a fan favorite in the previous edition, it now lacks emotion and depth forcing the reader to wonder why this lady is hugging a subordinate and crying.

The re-rewrite has significantly changed the relationships. Despite claiming to have no family or real friends, the MC and the police chief comment on how they feel like mother and son to each other. The MC's childhood friend describes the MC as being her "real brother." And Grace and the MC both remark about how they are like brother and sister. That dramatically reduces the love interests. Not to mention the impact it has on the story. Paired with the combatant nature of the other female main characters introduced in chapter one and the reader is left to wonder if this new story has any romance at all.

The visual novel has come full circle. The original story began with a barely readable garbled mess averaging 2.5 stars. By the second release, the changes to the story made it a dramatic, deeply touching character-driven story. It was loved by critics for its powerful story. The 'revamp' has devolved back into a bunch of poorly written, mechanical, and soulless images on the screen. However, the herd voice has spoken and unfortunately, the author listened. It will likely be abandoned in the near future, or worse, dragged into existence kicking and screaming until it just ends in silent embarrassment — both would be a tragedy considering this story once had so much... Promise (ugh).

This VN is far better and cohesive now, your rework could easily be called an upgrade at this point. I just finished playing new upgraded rework and honestly I'm quite impressed. I only wish I'd your level of skill set in rendering and development. Thank you.

Meet second girl. Repeat above.
Meet third girl. Twist, she's in a relationship, but unhappy. MC is irresistible of course.
Repeat with every single woman you meet in this game up to this point.

This kind of repetition would be fine, if we weren't presented with ton of inner monologue that's literally girls repeating "MC is so damn amazing!" "I can't believe MC is so amazing", "Wow, MC is amazing". It's fine, stop now, point was made after first 10 times.

It's still very early on so there are only 2 decisions in the game, but no problems there.

Renders are absolutely gorgeous, that's a major plus.

Story overall is undeveloped, for obvious reasons, but I can't say it gripped me in any way. If everyone repeats same lines, while having different background, that doesn't make them different, just same person in multiple scenarios.

Will definitely re-visit this review later on.

Amazing work in progress.. renders are up there with some of the best, story has a strong base to build from and some great characters each with their own unique impacts upon the ongoing story.. A Must Read in the making

This game does an outstanding job in what it is trying to do. I absolutely LOVE everyone in this game. There are very few VNs on this site with so many great characters. Every character has flaws and issues they are trying to deal with, and the dev explores every one of them with a lot of depth and detail. There is an MC, but every major character is given their time to shine.

It starts up like any other VN on this site does, but as you play along, you get invested in the characters. Everyone struggles with something and every one is connected to everyone else in some way. Some people might not like the "melodrama", but I liked it very much.

The visuals are also great. The character models look distinct, and the lighting and scene composition is also very well done.

My only knocks against the game are that there is very little choice, so it feels more like a kinetic novel than a VN. The grammar is also incorrect in some dialogues.

But these don't detract from the great characters who end up feeling like real people more than props in a story. Can't wait to see their stories further.

Wow I just found another gem of a game! This game has alot to offer. First and foremost the Li's. The Li's are all gorgeous everyone is a 10/10. I'm a sucker for blondies but this game made me have a change of heart. I really like the sisters Kylie and Afina. As i've mentioned all the LI's are gorgeous and have their own background stories. I like almost all the Li's introduced. Dunno if the cashier lady will be part of it i'm bias not into her but everyone else is a bombshell.

As for the story it's another 10/10. It's not everyday you find so much depth in the story on such games. And even so most follow a certain genre. But this game is giving it a twist adding depth and drama to the story which i really like.

The game even though only on its first update gave alot of players to look forward into. It gave a solid background for every character showing this isn't just a run of a mill game. Kudos to the devs for a great opening act. I'm excited for the upcoming updates and hoping the game will just get better.
