My Review of Brooks in Wild West V1.00
This review will look first at strong points and later on the weak points in following order:
You are the grandson of a famous sheriff from the wild west, while you try to get through you sophomore year in university a bully knocks you down and punches you. You as the player are then thrown into the time of your grandpa and try to survive in the wild west.
The Plot:
Settings in the wild west are quite rare to find on F95 and especially in the sea of NSFW games. It is a fresh breather and quite nice to play and experience something aside the usual highschool/fantasy/sci-fi plots. Although you might encounter some form of mysticism or the actual time travelling as it unfolds during the gameplay is somewhat spiritual (?) or fantastic.
People are badasses, calloused by the rough way of living and don't take shit. This is awesome and is also generally reflected in the agency of the characters presented in the early game (e.g. in the first 5 minutes of the game you get shot by a beauty because she thinks you perved on her while taking a bath in the lake).
Now where the plot does weaken a lot is in it's details. How come your are send over 100 years back in time to your GRANDFATHERS time? I mean if he had his kid at an age of 90 and MC's father had the MC at an age of 40 it would make somehow sense. Thinking logically it was the wild west and life expetancy was not so great there, so I am forced to do some wild mental gymnastics to somehow resolve this issue. Now further pressing into the plot, the MC does live off some plot-armor that is thick enough to withstand the whole global nuclear arsenal it seems. I'm going to delve deeper into this issue later on characters.
The plot itself does resolve in acceptable manner though, but still leaves many questions that could have been addressed at some point in the end-game or epilogue.
Characters:
Now firstly the LI's:
The LIs do have a certain variety and are firstly appealing to look at, read their writing and show also a strong initial agency. You might find the one or other trope but this fits quite nicely with the archetype most of the time. There are one or two character developments I do not understand (natives arc). Now what is sad to see is except for Dakota and somewhat Jane, every LI loses their agency quite fast and deteriorate into dumb followers. I do think the authors could have either make a greater character development arc or give them stronger story hooks for teaming up with the MC.
The Plot receives a solid 3/5
Now for the MC: I do understand he is in sophomore year of the university. I get the initial disposition of being cocky and cowardly at the same time. I also follow suit about having him hitting somewhat of a low-point so he can enter a development arc accordingly. But I do not understand how he remains that conceited and childish till the end. Yea he might be simpy and and somewhat of a virgin at the beginning but this over-top perviness just to push some cheap humor does not track. It especially does not track or appease the player if being in a state-of-mind of a virgin even after fucking five different people for multiple times.
He got shot multiple times, he got played multiple times and always risks so much just because he can't for the love of god not act like an adult (albeit a young one) for once. This is something that occurs often in games and authors for some reason tend to miss this mark heavily. Having gramps telling two or three times to man up is ok but please do follow-up on him becoming cautious of his behaviour after getting what he desvers for being a brat.
The characters outside the MC receive a solid 4/5
The MC itself receives sadly a 2/5
Visuals:
The visuals of the game are appealing and are on the better end lighting and compositioning wise. I love to look at the screen and enjoyed it. It is not outstanding but it delivers a solid impression. Sadly you see later in the game often the clothing clipping which is does drag down the rating of the game itself. Otherwise you can not expect much of fluid depiction but it is again in line of the average quality with that rendering.
It is nice to see the new default on visual fidelity increases with most of the newer games and as such it a solid 3/5
Animation:
The animations as usual with Daz3D models do lack impact and fluidity in the motion itself. There is really nothing worthwhile to mention as again it falls into somewhat average quality and what is usually seen with Daz3D models.
Solid 3/5
Gameplay:
The gameplay of Brooks in Wild West is a sandbox way of of telling the story. I do like the Quick-Time-Events and they are implement. Although simple it does shake up the experience. In the beginning the game is a bit grindy but it does reflect the orientation and gathering of the MC's bearings as he has to find himself some steady foothold in this new environment. Choices are somewhat semi-important.
I give it a good-willed 4/5
For the devs reading this:
Some improvements which greatly increase the quality of potential future games in descending priority:
- Improve the plot
- Add a good development arc for the MC
- Don't let the good first impression of the LIs fade as they lose their agency
- Seperate voices like moaning from other SFX for the player to fine-tune it in the settings according to their preference
Otherwise it was a pleasant experience to play and I'd check out the next Piggy Nose Games.
In total the game does receive a solid 3/5.
As a player you can expect a refreshing setting and lets you have a solid experience.
