It means you'll find out whenever the dev gets around to working on the sequel lol. Seriously though, it's probably up to your own interpretation. I took it as you actually lost or were captured and everything is the game was your "Dream of Desire". Basically your character escaping from reality. I mean his whole power was dream based so it'd make sense that he could create his own inner fantasy world.

I played it long time ago and haven't played the elite version, but isn't this related to the story told through the wards ?

After all it's one of the main point of the game ; the story of the walkers and the fight they are involved in. Something that started centuries ago, and never really stopped. The story told in the game is just one episode of this eternal fight, and this said episode reaching its end do not mean the end of the fight...

From my point of view, it's what those lines tell us.
