In my game there is a door that is blocked by a password. I'm not sure how obvious it is (I want it to be).

Can you guess it? Those are all infos the player gets atm.

So, if I have understood it correctly, players have to guess a 3-digits password and the only available tip is that there are 9 possible numbers? That means 9*9*9=729 possible combinations. Are you sure you want people to tell you to go fuck yourself? How on Earth are they going to lucky guess that?

Now, knowing the solution, maybe try to highlight the columns somehow, to indicate that each code number can be found in the column right below their respective position. That will reduce the possible combinations to 3*3*3=27, which is a bit easier to handle.

There is a piece of paper with "The funny number" on it.

I can't say if it easy since I thought the info is under spoiler (kinda implied) soo...

420

*edit* didn't look at spoiler tag but a 3 letter funny number had to be either 420 or one of the error codes (404, 505 etc)

I'm guessing that the spoiler is only there to hide the solution, it's not the tip. So the only tip that would be seen in-game is that piece of paper and honestly, I don't know how you can get that "the funny number" is 420, unless it has been stated somewhere else.

I thought the info was under spoiler (but it's straight up the sollution) bc I didn't noticed that at first either.

Yes, I should have put the spoilers under the picture.

Also, I'm going to change the password to something related to the game. Right now it's ,,how well do you know memes and pop culture,,

I would have tried 069 and 420 first. Someone less fluent in English (and English-language memes) would probably be stuck though.

Yes, change it. If you want everyone to be able to solve it, you can't have a password that requires knowledge outside of the game, no matter how obvious it may seem to you. Even knowing the answer 420 (and having heard of that day but forgot), I had to look it up to see what it meant.

and English-language memes
That's the key thing here. I've been decently fluent in English for 15+ years now and the ratio of English media (web, books, movies, games) I consume compared to media in my mother's language is at least somwhere around 4:1 nowadays.

And I still had absolutely no clue about this 420 thing until I looked it up today. Wouldn't even have guessed 69 as that number stopped being 'funny' to me around the time I stopped being a teenager...

I'm not grumpy, I'm just coded that way.

Well, it's (relatively) obvious for a part of North Americans below 30yo, and probably also a part of the stoners (whatever their country) who are web addict. For the others, even if they know what 420 mean, really few should find it ; yet probably after many failed attempts.
So, if you intend for your game to be played only by North Americans stoners below 30yo, you can keep this password, a large majority of them should find it. But if you expect other peoples to play your game, you should find something more universal, coupled to a better hint.

This being said, after the second attempt I would just look at the source code to see what the password is. While less Ren'Py wise players will just flood the game thread with "Password ?".
