Why are there some games on here that go 5 months without an update and get the "abandoned" tag yet this game has gone 5 months without an update and no one seems to really be batting an eye?

The developer has not suspended this game, it hasn't been more than 18 months since the last update, and the game is not on hold. The timestamps for their Patreon posts since the last update on this thread are:
  • May 1st, 2025 (RELEASE: v0.5.4.13 for their lower subscriber tier. The steam update from a week later is what we have here.)
  • July 14th, 2025 (Development blog)
  • August 5th, 2025 (Development update)
  • August 9th, 2025 (Poll)
  • September 17th, 2025 (RELEASE: v0.6.3 for their higher subscriber tier)
  • September 22nd, 2025 (RELEASE: v0.6.4 for their lower subscriber tier)
Since there is no 3+ month gap, there is no condition under which the abandoned tag should be applied. And even if this thread hasn't updated in the last three months, the game has actually been updated in the interim. We just don't upload the Patreon builds here because nobody can be bothered to create an unreal project for this game in order to remove the security measures the Patreon builds use that prevent it from starting up without compromising information about a Patreon account.

I'm not in the loop, why should the newer updates be sent through a ticket or through a report?
Also, would those links in the front page direct me to the steam version?

TBH that's a leftover from years ago when this game's developers were taking a much more personal hand in their anti-piracy measures. These days the Patreon builds have your Patreon ID baked into the download so the developers can ban you, and also require a data file with information about your Patreon account and subscription in order to successfully launch. People who share it without finding a way to edit the game and remove the pre-title Patreon check end up with one of the following results:
  • They share it without the data file and this thread gets several pages of people complaining that the game doesn't work until someone convinces a moderator to revert the download. Optionally still getting banned from subscribing to the Patreon because they missed their id in the game's files.
  • They sacrifice a Patreon account in order to share a single game build complete with the data file that needs to be installed elsewhere on your computer.
Generally neither option is worth the hassle when the Steam build is trivial to crack and just requires a bit of waiting, which is why the downloads on the front page are for Steam copies of the game.

Patreon does not bake your ID into the downloads as this would be a pain to do and in some countries (especially UK & Europe) a massive privacy violation and against Patreon rules. As most downloads are off site the only way a developer could know is if they were actively monitoring this site and your ID here was same as your Patreon ID

Yes, your ID gets baked into downloads. No, it is not done by Patreon. It is done by the launcher that downloads the game for Patreon/SubscribeStar users. That launcher discretely adds your account id to one of the files in the game folder which the developers have used to ban accounts in the past. Trust me, one of my accounts was banned for precisely this reason. The launcher also creates a separate file in your appdata folders, which has more detailed information about your account and subscription status. Without a valid copy of that file, Patreon builds will load a piracy disclaimer rather than loading the title screen.

And yes, they actively monitor the downloads here. They even used to post here on occasion, but now they mostly just nuke any downloads they can remove. That's why we can't keep a mega link up and have to rely on the slower hosts.

A brief history of how these developers have handled this game's protections:
  1. Initially, they just DMCAed download links
  2. Due to F95's robust uploading policy and many hosts not respecting takedowns, they removed direct download options and created a launcher that would bake your ID into the game data, and banned subscribers who shared the game
  3. There was some back and forth at this point as they rapidly updated the launcher. Eventually they gave up on just using the launcher because people learned of the ID and someone also made an alternative launcher that would download the game without a login. Instead, they added a scene before the title screen that would check account data and lock you out if you weren't subscribed
  4. That anti-piracy check has been updated several times since to remove some flaws it had, including not properly validating some subcribers due to improper string handling (always with the bugs on this game, lol)
  5. We are here. At this point Steam is easier and doesn't get the devs to waste a bunch of time trying to figure out how to make their custom DRM any tighter, which is probably a good thing because I don't see them managing that without breaking more stuff.

Only some Developers and if you read Patreon's T&C properly it is against their rules and Patreon are just hosts nothing more

They don't host the game on Patreon. They use Patreon's API (via their launcher) to validate your account and its subscription status before allowing you to download the game from their own servers, and then store some of that validated data on your computer for the game to check.

And just to be perfectly clear: I am talking about the Carnal History Patreon account specifically, and the incidents, changes, and events I have personally observed while this game has been under development.

They're not typically simultaneous. Instead they release for the higher Patreon tiers (already done), wait a bit and release for the lower tiers (already done), and then wait a bit longer and release on Steam (not yet done).

Each subsequent release has additional bugfixes, too.
Based on everything I have read about this in various Steam community discussions and elsewhere , the consensus seems to be that Valve will not permit NSFW games that are in Early Access to update and remain in Early Access; they can only add content by declaring the game complete and removing it from Early Access. Carnal Instinct is (and has always been) in Early Access. Based on what I have read, I don't expect any updates on Steam at least until they manage to merge the UE4 and UE5 versions.

I have not seen any explicit confirmation of Valve changing update handling for adult games, but what I have seen discussed (but not confirmed) was a bit more extreme than that. If it's actually happening, it isn't that adult games are not allowed to update and remain in early access. It is that adult games are not allowed to update at all and new content must be offered as DLCs, since DLCs are subject to the full manual review process while updates have no review process at all.

But I have not seen confirmation of such and their moderators on Discord have continued insisting that the Steam update will happen soon. Until we have explicit confirmation from the game's devs that the development model is being forced to change, it's reasonable to assume it remains unchanged and they're as untimely as usual.
