I've started working on a new text-based, sandbox RPG: Dusk of a Fallen Empire. Here's an early WIP version of the character creator. What features are essential for you in a character creator?

Don't know if that will be relevant to your game, but if there are many choices per option (hair, face, etc.), there should always be a an additional dropdown list.
It can be quite annoying having to click through dozens of choices one by one when you want to compare some of them.

Other than that, it looks fine?

Yeah, it will be fairly easy to implement, once the volume of options justify its existence.

likely already planned, but tooltips explaining attributes (what they're used for or what mechanics they affect, and how easy/hard it is to increase them later).

if the physical appearance doesn't change often (or changes can be avoided, like a no transformations run in coc/tits), an option to load an external image as mc's portrait/bust and an option to switch between that and the default bust at will.

There is a baic tooltip system working at the moment, it will be expanded further in the future.

Yeah, I’m thinking about that. In a few games where uploading an image is an option, it’s always appreciated, but I’m considering making the paper doll a bit more dynamic.

Looks like you've got all the basic stuff in there. I'd agree that a dropdown menu is more convenient than clicking through one by one if there are lots of appearance options.

Other than that I'd just say to occasionally reference the player character's general looks in scenes where it makes sense. I've always thought it was kinda silly in the CoC-like games when they write the PC as being totally thrown off when they meet someone with the exact same body type that you made.
