I was looking forward to this game because it looked good, but unfortunately that's all it ever does.
Almost all "big" games(in this case, CH takes around 3-something gigs on your hard drive) are usually what's considered to be "good" games. I dunno why, it's just the way it usually goes. Even Thanatos, the game which size was inflated mostly by the same animations with different shades of tentacles, can be considered a good game, even if it kinda fell short in some respects. You can say something good about it. However, I can't say anything good about Chevalier Historie. I just can't. But sure, let's go over some major aspects of the game.
Plot: blah-blah-blah, ancient danger was sealed in the past and now is accidentally unsealed, right at this fucking moment the game takes time at. Your princess friend got captured and now you have to save her and the whole kingdom or something. Very engaging.
The problem is not with the plot itself, because, unoriginal and overdone as it may be, it could be easily circumvented by some good presentation. However, it's presented about as interesting and original as you can expect from a fifth-grader's essay, though I do doubt that a fifth-grader can write it as dull and frustratingly uninspired. I honestly believed that the reason why it's written in such a mundane way was because, later on, there'd be some cool twist to flip the unsuspecting player's expectations from tip to toes.
But no. It never happened. Fuck's sake.
What's baffling me is that you can clearly see they were trying to add some more stuff into presentation, make it look more whole, polished, bigger, etc. Like, you can frequently stumble upon optional flashbacks, which kinda hints the player on that there's "more" to the story and the characters. But there really isn't. It's a trap. There's literally nothing more to what you've already seen, and that's really bloody frustrating.
Characters are one-dimensional and forgettable. I honestly forgot about pretty much every single NPC I squeezed the flavor text from, save for that fairy dude in the randomized dungeon and only because he looked like an anime Peter Pan or something. MC is supposed to be a naive hard-working girl that we must root for, however she comes off as a totally insufferable imbecile. There's absolutely no pleasure in either helping her achieving her goals or corrupting her, that's how bad it is. I only enjoyed H-scenes by disconnecting from her in-game persona and taking a mental note that this is not the same person I controlled the whole game.
OST? It might have been there, but it's about as forgettable as NPC. Probably some usual RPGM stock music, I dunno.
Gameplay? Let's just say it's all about cheesing your opponents, an is about as fun as watching the paint dry. It's not turn-based. Yes, it's supposed to be fast-paced action, but here's the thing: you are very restricted in your movements. You can't attack while moving, you can't even move diagonally. You literally can't do shit the way it's supposed to be. And it's pretty unpolished, too. You think I was joking about "cheesing" your opponents? You can literally hit through the fucking walls if your attack reach is long enough. Oh, and that standing portrait of the heroine that is everpresent in most H-RPGs? You can't even appreciated the artwork because your attention is glued towards dealing with enemies or avoiding traps. Devs really missed the mark hard there, I am speechless.
Oh, and that's not all, by the way. Worst thing of all is that the game gives you more and more stuff right off the bat to take away whatever challenge you could have had. Don't wanna have your clothes tear anymore? Here's the item that prevents that altogether lmao, for just being present in one of the starting events. Don't wanna get fucked in a random fight and have your virginity stolen? Here's the item given away in a literal tutorial zone that prevents that, I am not even joking. Tired of earning spending money? Here's the item that gives you literally infinite money, after you complete a very mediocre dungeon. I can go on and on. This... "gameplay" is about as engaging as a VN's, basically.
Spritework and CG art is gorgeous though. Like, it actually is. The only good part of the game is that juicy art. It's literally the only reason why I rate it more than just one star. Can't say anything more about it, look at the screenshots and it'll speak for itself.
H-Scenes are hit or miss. Some are good, some are meh. I personally appreciate that it caters towards some of my own fetishes, but objectively it doesn't make the whole game look better. Some setups are crazy hot(like that chain of slum Inn or the bathhouse events, just, muah, a chef's kiss), some are ordinary plain-ol'-rape or "tricked into sex" thing. But what is good there - it really is.
My verdict? The game is trash. Probably the first Wolf RPG game I played that is actual trash. I don't recommend buying it, I don't even recommend trying it if not for some H-Scenes, and if that's the case - download a full save and snoop through the gallery. You really won't miss out on much.
