What are the rules on copying an art style? If I were to make a game using total drama style characters?

  • Copyright is the legal and exclusive right to copy, or permit to be copied, some specific work of art.
  • If you own the copyright on something, someone else cannot make a copy of it without your permission.
  • Copyright usually originates with the creator of a work, but can be sold, traded, or inherited by others.
Unless you write it off as a fandom then no problem

The characters themselves might have copyright by Cartoon Network just like Disney has with Mickey Mouse. Even with parody laws if they want to get you for infringement they could. But the Art style itself would be hard to build a case around

What do you mean by fandom? How does that work?

Fan game to pay tribute to the original
Video games or storylines are so powerful and so strongly affect players that they sometimes want to create games that are spin-offs in honor of these titles. However, this can be a dangerous thing because game companies often have good lawyers, and they will not hesitate to sue you if you create a similar game without following the proper procedures. Some developers want to be the sole creators of a certain character or game, others do not care if tribute versions of their games are made, and all companies will want to know how they are being affected by your creation.

In this case , well there might not need to contact the original producer (total drama island is big series ) because you are worrying about the artstyle and you making sex game however there are some artist who actually borderlinely have same art as they practice on it . It can be worrisome since your art actually kinda similar to certain character to the total drama island but hey it is cartoon and many show can share same drawing (maybe it is easy to draw?)

If you were to start your own original game with those art then feel free to do so , Internet is kinda big place and if your indie game somehow become famous then good for you although it will lure some copycats to try to take your work for themselves so they can earn from your hardwork so it is best to get licensed by trusted third party or just put your patreon on your games to avoid YandereDev (borrowed material with poor work ethnic suck) Starting original game is difficult afterall.

Well it would be pretty hard for them to sue you. Since, you'd be using their characters for Satire and/or parody purposes.
Especially since, Saturday Night Live and Werid Al Yankovic and XXX Porn movies have been doing it for decades.

Easy for them to sue you. Hard for them to win. Which is moot if you can't afford a lawyer and don't want the hassle. A lot of suits are either meritless or very shaky, but they get filed anyway because small opponents can be bullied (and company lawyers often don't understand copyright law particularly well so they think they have a case when they don't).

You can't copyright art style, but you can copyright character design. Avoid making characters who look similar to any of the characters in total drama island. If you making a fan game be careful.

You can't copyright an art "style", only specific characters, etc. If you want to draw something in the "style" of someone else, that isn't actually any of their characters, you're completely free to do so. If you draw Mickey Mouse, you are asking for trouble. If you draw an original cat in the style of Mickey Mouse, you're fine.

Trademark comes into play when dealing with extremely well-known characters. If a creation infringes, dilutes or arguably defames or devalues the mark, the mark holder can sue.
Copyright pertains to original creative work. The name "Mickey Mouse", his design and his "universe" are all copyrighted material, an original creation of Walt Disney Corp. You have some leeway under fair use parody/satire to create something derivative. You might be able to mimic an art style and not get into trouble over it, so long as you don't claim it as the other artist's work(and so long as you don't claim another artist's work as your own.).
