A bit of this... A bit of that...
Version reviewed: Final.
It is a rare sight to see the game so different in its parts from ... itself. By the time the player figures out how to play the game, the game suddenly changes completely, so the player finds oneself in a different setting with different plot and different goals. What? Why? How? Let us embark on a journey throughout this strangely built game and figure out what this all means.
The Setting.
The game is based on "Avatar Legend of Korra" animated series, featuring the locations and characters from this universe. The timeline seems to be during and after the events of books 3 and 4 of the show. However, the characters are quite different from their depiction in the show, they act as if someone else took control of their body. For the game made for the fans of the franchise and designed to satisfy the urges of such fans this seems to be a questionable move, as the inner workings of the world have been swapped almost entirely, and only a husk of the original remains.
The plot.
The player takes control of someone working in Varrick's studio, who is tasked with helping Korra to pay back her debt which she somehow owes to Varrick. During the first part of the game this goal is rather simple - make enough money by pushing Korra to do more lewd actions which also pay more. Good idea, but let's move on.
So, here the game takes the first turn. The player can pay back the debt in time and everything advances as normal OR the player can fail, in which case Korra is moved to player's house (for some reason) and now is tasked with being at least somehow productive. But let's return to the parralel universe where the player managed to complete the task. So what then? The game, guess what, changes entirely again. Now all previous actions become unobtainable and Korra and other characters can perform different stuff. And then another turn - the game MAY become weirdly plot-focused, as if the player is now a detective, with the invasion of Kuvira and her soldiers. Or it may not happen. Now let's return to the point where Korra has failed to pay her debt, here there are also two different paths for her to take, one entirely different from the other.
So, yeah... The plot is weird as it accounts for player actions which normally result in a "game over" and instead splits the route into two. It happens 3 times. We get an entire tree of sub-games, each of which is very different from the rest in terms of plot, game mechanics, flow of gameplay, encountered scenes.
The characters.
Here is what I most dislike about the game. The characters are drawn well, very close to the original, but that's it! What on earth are they doing? Why is Asami suddenly a porn actress when she is handling a huge tech company? Why is Korra acting like at least 3 different people at once? What the hell is wrong with Zhu Li? Who put her in charge of a ... small shop? She is supposed to be Varrick's partner! Am I really supposed to believe all this from one-two lines thrown like a treat to the dog without any elaboration whatsoever? Well, sorry, but I cannot. These are so drastic changes they need to be thoroughly explained, and better, show the player the process which has lead to them happening. Why does the player meet Asami in pro-state in her new "job", when the player could follow her slowly change from the film version to whatever the author of the game throws at us? This is such a missed opportunity.
Usually if any drastic change is done to the character of the universe the game is built in, it is explained why it happens, and almost always shown in development instead of the end result, and not just dropped on the player. Lazy writing in this game unwilling to explain the events beyond the actual plot does not go anywhere and this saddens me, as otherwise the game could have been so much better.
The art.
This includes the "adult scenes", sprites and backgrounds. And they are... alright? Mostly. Some of those look rather scuffed, in some the proportions are not met, and some other, in contrary, are exceptionally well made. But, if the "weighted average" is rated, it is likely around 4/5. But there is variety, in both ways. Here also come in the different "subgames" this game has. Some of those blocks are falling behind on the art side, the rest are carrying out the entire game on their shoulders.
Misc points.
Here I would want to discuss the features which don't quite fit anywhere else.
So, firstly, the engine for this game is Unity, but the game itself plays like a classic RenPy game. The choice of the game engine was not ideal. The player will often find oneself lacking the features which come out of the box for a RenPy game, but need to be implemented from scratch in Unity game. Some of which are implemented, but some other features are not, which is obviously a downside, as the game would get a lot of quality of life features instantly, if it was just ported to RenPy.
Next, the game features quite a nice variety of funny scenes, the developer has a great sense of humor and is not afraid to use it to craft such scenes as "Lords of the lockerroom" featuring Korra and Asami. This scene alone is the reason to play the game, but there are a few other great scenes which are definitely the game's good points.
Finally, one block of the game features several fetishes which are unavoidable, and not widely appreciated, like bestiality for example. There is no warning that this particular route will feature those fetishes, so the player may find oneself dragged into something they do not enjoy. I would count it as a downside, but to each their own.
The summary.
I have mixed feelings about this game, which, hopefully, I was able to elaborate above. I would really like to like this game, but with how good it can be, it can also be rather bad in some moments, and this uneven rating of the game's features brings my total score to 3/5. The game is average. I expected higher and stable quality throughout the entire game, but sadly it did not happen. Would I recommend the game? Likely yes, provided the reader is aware of the "Avatar Legend of Korra" universe.
