I think the Godot Engine could be an ideal stepup from Renpy for many developers that want both 2d and 3d for their game but are intimidated by C# or C++ from Unity/Unreal Engine. Renpy Python and Godot GDScript are more or less the same and both have a free "do whatever the fuck you want with your game" license without royalties.
