Devs using honeyselect / the various similar ones

So been digging around lately into this creation aspect part and I was aware some devs use honeyselect models/environment/studio w/e but there's also posts saying it's not allowed, even if you aren't directly selling but rather just using patreon etc.

Has things changed since whenever they said it's not allowed? Are they just YOLOing it hoping they don't get DCMA'd or worse? Or is there some legal reasoning behind them still using it since technically the assets don't leave their software and screenshots/videos are used through renpy?

It's still against the user agreement. The only "legal" problems come from the western distributor though. They really like money and will use any mob shakedown tactic to get it.

In most cases it is the latter, games that are only using screnshots and animations can get away with it because:

one, they are not using the game itself to make money

two, devs usually don't sell the game, they offer it for free, and the Patreon thing is only support to the dev, not prive for the game per se.

Although Steam still does not accept games made with RenPy and screenshots
