difference between CG and animation?

CG means computer generated? For some reason I thought it meant something else but essentially, animated.

Isn't all 3D technically CG?

CG is not always animated, right?

It seems like some games are tagged with CG but not animation but are indeed animated and vice versa.

CG links in game threads means the images are extracted from the game, so you can look without playing.

CG means Computer Graphics and they can be 3D (Renders) or 2D (Drawn through the use of a drawing software such as GIMP or Photoshop, even paint when it comes to pixel art).

3D can be done outside of computer graphics, so not all 3D is CG.

CG can be composed of either multiple frames (animated) or have a single frame (not animated).

I think you mean 2DCG here^^
No, it is true for 2D as well obviously, but 3D can be done outside of computer graphics as well.
In older games (Fallout 1/2 era), all the 3D was done with clay, including the animations. That is 3D, but not 3D CGs.

Well that's a bit off topic then, kinda confusing tbh, and to add a bit more confusion: if you make a screenshot of that and put it in the games folder, it would become a 3DCG xD

Well, not really... It would be more akin to a photo, they do not classify as 3DCG because they are not Computer Graphics, unless you do some post work on those.

so
3dcg = 3d stuff made with computers that can be viewed in a separate file than the executable/without using the executable/playing the game but does not have to be animated.

2dcg = 2d stuff made with computers that can be viewed in a separate file than the executable/without using the executable/playing the game but does not have to be animated.

Animated = May be 2d or 3d or cg but will have animated scenes. even if not cg.

cg = made with computers. does not have to be animated. can be viewed without playing the game.

Pretty much, yes. As long as you remember CG = Computer Graphics, it is pretty self-explanatory.

Well here's the sites official definition for games uploaded here.

3D Game [*Used for 3D Games, not to be confused with 3DCG.]
3DCG [*Used for 3D CG (3D Renders).]

2D Game [*Used for 2D Games, not to be confused with 2DCG.]
2DCG [*Used for drawn CG.]

Animated [Used in combination with 2DCG/3DCG/Real Porn when a CG is animated.]

And you wonder why the new "game poster's" get it wrong some times - lol.
