I've posted several times, at least in terms of replies, but I still can't start a conversation with someone. Does it have to be 5+ postings, and are some postings counted when others aren't?

sorry to hear that you are having difficulty at the moment, to start DM conservation to user you firstly need 20 posts, you currently only have 6 posts. you can increase post count by posting on on topic threads

How about just going to the game threads of the games you like and engaging in the conversation(s) there? That's what this forum is for... to engage in conversations with others about the content being shared on this site.
