many failures is not a proof of no successes.
To expand on this, or simplify depending how you look at it. Anecdotal examples are shit.
If something walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it's most likely a duck.
When you're long enough in a place, you can start seeing a pattern. There's nothing wrong with giving a realistic answer if their only concern is making money.

Of course I'd love being proven wrong, after all I am making a few assumptions here. Maybe OP loves making games and would do it even for free, or perhaps he lives in a country where even a few hundred bucks would count as a "job".

If you want more "data", then Count Morado has already posted it.

No one is arguing with the data or probability of success. We're arguing with you using anecdotal examples to support your point. Keep up.

The title made me think this was going to be about how many users are employed or have businesses against how many are unemployed. That'd prolly be a very, very depressing topic.

You have a good chance of making under $100 per month. If you'd invest in assets like buying from the Daz shop, unlikely because you seem to be into AI but let's go with this example, you'd have to be careful to spend less than you earn from your game.

I checked OPs post history and, judging by the few posts that they've made, they do not need help making the game. But that could be misleading, so whatever.
I couldn't agree more.

But I saw the posts you mean, I think.

you can make a point and give good advice without being too categorical, that's all i'm saying
Then I'll rephrase the point for him:

If your only motive is to make money, then you'll focus on wanting to please as many persons as possible, what will lead to a fluctuating story that will please no one. You'll also starts to works on your game, then release its first version, before you worked long enough on your story, what imply that you'll not know how to make it advance and, worse, how to finish it. But, more important, like it's your motivation, and like less than 2% earn at least US$ 2000/month (5% for US$ 1000/month) during their first year, if you don't starts big right from the starts, you'll quickly loose all desire to works on your game. And like it's a hobby that need a lot of sacrifice and dedication, your motivation is a really important point.

Saying "it is nearly impossible" isn't realism, it's simply unnecessary pessimism. It's never been easier than in today's day and age to earn money by making games and eventually become a fulltime indie dev. With all the freely accessible tools available, the opportunities are greater than ever. That said, like any business venture, it's not an easy task.

going with the contrarian spirit ...
and somewhat out-of-context, but actually "yesnaby".

Four you or me or Anne, yes, maybe. for the general public/ some problem kids: no.

For many folks, as long as even the tiniest possibility is left open, they WILL misunderstand possible = probable.
studies were made about prevention of unwanted behaviour. The very, very, very high chance of being caught did NOT keep people from parking their car in unwanted place, ONLY the 100% GUARANTEED certainty of being caught (traffic warden visibly only two parked cars away) kept them from doing so*.

So, even if someone agrees generally with your statement, it might be more practical to go with the mandatory/ strict/ generalised version, which is: no.

mind you, my original idea for a reply to this topic, when there was no reply at all yet was: "You can earn money by selling polished ancient poop, so: sure, why not"

well, not Tim Wiese. He'd park his Lamborghini there on the streetcar tracks anyways. It's a Lamborghini, it's Tim Wiese, so it's allright, no?

Yes. In fact, creators earn so well through Patreon/SubscribeStar that they will actually start making excuses and stalling production just so they can "milk" their supporters for more money every month.

Notice how popular games are never really completed, they are just put on hold, given DLC, given reworks or just outright remade after a period of time.

XXX games are a goldmine.
