Hey there, good people!

I am currently working on my game and need a bit of feedback regarding the most common resolutions people are using.

The images I want to use should be as clear and crisp as possible, so I don't want to sacrifice quality for unnecessary downscaling. That's why I intend to set the base game resolution to 1600x900 with the option to go Fullscreen Window Mode and Exclusive Fullscreen.

This would be a huge blow to people with smaller monitors, though. That's why I'd like to get a rough estimate whether or not I should consider changing my plans and start with a smaller base resolution (which would in return result in even more loss of image quality when going fullscreen)

Let me know what you think! :)

Certainly, in fact, I think screen above 1080 are the minority.

A good quality picture of 720 and above is good enough for the most part, as long as you don't screw up with compression.

If you're curious, just take a look at the statistics:

Mobile devices take up a big chunk of the market, making 360x640 the most common resolution currently.

Or, if you're not concerned with tablets or mobile devices:

You can see there that about 28% of people worldwide are using 1366x768 resolution, the next highest percentage being a bit over 19% with 1920x1080 resolution (what I have). Even 1024x768 has just over 4%, which means a little over 1 in 25 people.

So, you might want to shoot for 1024x720 (combining min width and min height) as your minimum, if you want to maximize the size of your audience.

I ran across a great deal on a 32" 720p TV last year and picked it up to replace my old monitor. I actually went down ever so slightly in resolution, as my old screen was 1200 x 900, but that was a lot smaller and 4:3.

According to the , 1080p is the most dominant resolution out in the wild, making up around 60% of their respondents. 720p comes in second at around 15% and less than 2% are on 4K by the looks of it.

360x640 for mobile? That doesn't make any sense. Most mobiles I know are at least 720p+
Those are worldwide statistics, so a lot of that is the Asian market, including China and India. The numbers change quite a bit if you limit yourself to, for example, just the US:

Also, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Samsung S3, and Samsung S4 are among the most popular Android phones, and they all have a 360x640 resolution. See:

To further complicate matters, the resolution isn't the same as the viewport when you're running at a higher DPI. For example, a 360x640 resolution phone displaying at 200% DPI will have a viewport of 720x1280. It gets even more complicated in cases like like the iPhone 6+, where the image may be created at 1242x2208, but scaled down to 1080x1920 for display.

Suffice it to say that the numbers are real, but it's a bit more complicated than it appears at first glance.

according to

1920x1080 is most popular at 60% but 1366x768 still needs to be considered at 15%. Its a pretty popular laptop screen resolution, sold on new cheap ass laptops even today.
