I'm finishing the concept of a new game and I was wondering... may I make a male or female protagonist? Any suggestion about protagonist would be very appreciated too. Thank you!!

The game/story should dictate what you go with; either can work. Some may have a preference, but ultimately it should be your own opinion on how you want the game to play out that matters most. You'll probably play your game far more than anyone else ever will, so go with whatever you'd enjoy most.

My preference is female 100%.

Part of why is that when i play these games, i don't imagine myself in the role of the main characters or try to significantly identify with them, so i don't need it to be a male in order to fulfill that. I like watching different kinds of people in different kinds of situations having experiences i can't or don't want to have irl, so you're basic male character perspective in fairly vanilla situations usually don't do very much for me. In a sense it's very voyeuristic, and for me, a female protagonist perspective is almost always the best way to experience that.

Long corruption focused rpmg titles seem to work best with female protag. You have a gameplay goal where you corrupt the female protagonist and if you like her character progress then every sex scene appeals to you. A dance of rogues, claire's quest, coceter chronicles etc. to name a few examples.
Obviously you can also make a gay/bi-sexual male mc you progressively corrupt and who gets dominated.

You want to avoid male mc who stays static as a character and does random girls the plot didn't develop as characters, (cheap 3dcg renpy games is plagues by this) or falling to the trap of making multiple different girls paths where any one player only likes one of those paths and they end up with a game where 20% of the content appeals to them and rest is worthless.
You want majority of the players liking majority of the scenes the game gets each update, otherwise why would they follow it or pledge for the game. That is achieved easily with a female mc the player likes.

Im quoting myself here, since that is a topic coming up regularly.

Never have I ever played a female protagonist game and thought of the MC as anything else than a pawn, a puppet to run into situations I want to see.

Never have I ever played a male protagonist game and thought of the MC as anything else than a pawn, a puppet to run into situations I want to see.

Do people try to identify with any protagonists ever? Giving the games, the themes, and the mostly really shoddy written characters, I tend to believe most just, you know, use the tools that are given with any game (as in the MC and options) to see what scenes they might want to see.

Now, if any game comes along that makes me pay attention to female things, reminds me to put on makeup and how the right way would be, and what dress goes along the best, then I would probably also think thats a bit too much for me as a male player. But until then im playing whoever/whatever to reach my goals in a game. (and those are seeing characters do things with their genitals, mostly).

Normal games - don't really mind either way.

Ero-games - Female preferred, makes the experience more direct and hands-on than doing it through an intermediary male NPC that I don't really care about.

Hi, i am new here, glad too; to answer your question, as long as it has the needed ingredients, put whatever you like, people would use their imagination, and so we have here i guess.

Like Uradamus said: It's up to you and what you want for YOUR game.

But for answer; i prefer a male as a MC. Because, i usually get attached to the protagonist and if it's a girl, im not gonna like all the scenes we can see in corruption games etc, feel like NTR for me. (But in a vanilla story, why not)

Female, because I prefer lesbian games. Ideally I like the play the more dominant part of a lesbian couple. A perfect game for me would feature a powerful female protagonist, possibly some sort of warrior with a milf partner, who did not have any lesbian experience until she met the protagonist. I like both the protagonist and her partner with curves but within a realistic scale. NO straight encounters for female protagonists please!

In case I do play a straight game, I prefer a male protagonist. Most important for a male protagonist: He should neither be a teenage virgin nor a creepy grandpa. Other male characters are not welcome!

I prefer a 3rd person perspective. As a result I tend to prefer female protagonists, because 99% of male protags are first person only. But games like Babysitter or Milfy City, which aren't afraid to show the MC are also in my list as great games. So really what matters is that you make a good game with relatable characters. I don't relate to first person faceless MCs. Make your MC relatable and it won't matter what genitals they have.

(I admit I only skimmed the other responses, so sorry if I'm being redundant.)

Like a few others have mentioned, I don't often think of the PC as "me" when I play a game. I think this approach can open you up to playing various characters not just based on gender, but even attitudes and morals, etc. When I play games, I try to play the character in whatever way seems interesting to the setting. As Darth mentioned, pulling the camera back to third person can help disassociate the player directly with a protagonist. Some games even have you play as several characters.

On the flip side, sometimes a nice first person game with a good story can bring you in and the choices you make are more YOUR choices. That's also fine imo.

There are two broad ways to make a protagonist generally. One is to paint a picture of who they are. You make it clear they have desires and goals, that pre-existed the game starting. Flesh them out as it were. The other way is to make them more of a blank canvas. You don't make their personality so concrete that it feels weird to play them out the way you want. This lets the player invest more in deciding their character through the game. Both are valid and it depends on what experience you are trying to deliver.

I think devs and players alike should have as few constraints as possible on what games they make or play. If you are focused too narrowly, you are really limiting yourself. I realize people have their turn ons and turn offs and I'm not saying you have to do something you don't want. I'm just saying if you open up the possibility space, you can find new experiences.

I don't mind whichever male or female, even futa lol either will work for I prefer games where the mc is the more often in the dominant position. not that I don't enjoy the games with the mc in sub I simply prefer it the other way.

I prefer female as I found nearly all the male protagonists annoy the tits off me and I usually want to give them NTR endings or bad endings generally. Female with conditions if there is genuine choices and decisions FC actually make a difference.

Futanari MC. It's the best of both worlds 1. Hot Woman 2. Hot Woman with dick to fuck other women with.

I play both.
In the female MC games, I tend to get overly protective of the MC and as a consequence miss out on most sex scenes, at least the straight ones... I don't really like games where the female MC will get corrupted no matter what choices the player makes.
In the male MC games, it depends on the character and the story. If the MC is a douchebag and the story unrealistic, I'll fuck everybody. If the MC is a person I can identify with, I also tend to be quite selective.

I don't have a specific preference. If done well, both perspectives can be really interesting.

But like the others already mentioned, it also depends on what kind of game it is.

Total opposite. I am the MC so he has to be male. With a female MC i feel like when i have to do something like fuck a guy or even a girl, it's NTR for me as I AM the MC and being a girl MC she is my girl and i don't want to share her with anyone... Jealous much :0)

When playing an AAA game like Mass Effect, female protagonist all the way...

My preference is female 100%.

Part of why is that when i play these games, i don't imagine myself in the role of the main characters or try to significantly identify with them, so i don't need it to be a male in order to fulfill that. 99.9% of the time female if I'm presented a choice whether AAA or porn game I'm playing, I like watching/experiencing the game through female POV, because writing tends to be more interesting than the faceless/cheesy male MC in my experience.

The choice might be because my fetishes or that I might have been subjected to way too much shittily written game.

I simply prefer male protagonist, as I want to see MC vs All Girls ... then female protagonist which MC vs All Males.

Tbh, many female protagonist games quality both story & animation are far superior than male protagonist game, I have to credit them that way. But for self preference, Male Protagonist is always my choices. Hell, even my favorite no 1 & 2 are basically the Female lead the story plot instead the male protag who don't do anything impact to the plot.

Hope one day I can find a games which the developer can create a very well made Male Protagonist games. So far, it is exist, but so rare in quantity.
