Does the game engine matter? Which one do you prefer? (Ren'Py, Unity (Naniniovel), Godot)

If a VN has really good reviews I'll try it regardless of game engine.

But in my experience RenPy is by far the best for VNs and I think most people would agree with that. There seems to be something wrong with every VN made in Unity. Like the skip button doesn't work, or it's laggy, or the text speed isn't adjustable. There's just always a problem lol.

For a VN it doesn't really matter as long as the core functionality works smootly and without any bugs. Unless you want to do something fancy with graphics, RenPy already has all you need out of the box, instead of relying on addons or your own code.

+1 for Renpy. It's something you can get started with even with no programming experience. All you really need is the patience to write and you'll have a great foundation to start with. As for the art, that will always be a challenge if you're not using premade assets. But that's part of the experience of being a developer. Despite its ease of access, you can still make amazing projects with it if you got the time and skills, e.g. DDLC

It depends on the game. But in general I prefer Ren'py for AVNs and Unity/Unreal Engine for 3Ds.
