It took forever to finish this game because of how hard it is. The game would have gotten a 4 star instead of a 3 star but alas, this game made me salty for multiple reasons. There are some story spoilers. Because this is the first game in the series, it was essential for me to actually finish it to give a better feel of the later games. Alas...game didn't age well.
Pros:
Pros:
- Quality porn scenes
- Great art
- Battle fuck
- Really good story to set up the lore for the whole universe. This game is incredibly depressing for a hentai game.
- Mina’s character in general is depressing. When you hear of her actions in Miss Lisette and how she acts in Key of Egg, you understand why she’s so cynical.
- After sneaking past a certain enemy, you get an acid trip area. This part has amazing writing and again goes into Mina’s backstory which is just FeelsBadMan.
- Multiple ways of dealing with a scenario. In area 2, you can either go the roundabout way of collecting all the material to bomb the door or just challenge the demon directly. Area 4 can have you sneak around the goblin camp or confront the boss directly if you found the correct item in the third area, etc.
- Multiple endings (and still not happy)
- This game’s RNG has the most unfair piece of shit I have ever played. There is no way that I can increase my speed constantly only to never be able to escape. Many battles have been lost only because I failed to escape due to being in low health and not being able to heal.
- Early game is RNG hell. You are lacking in items, armor and strength and advised to avoid combat. Too bad the corridors in the basement are too damn tight to effectively dodge.
- You have a limited amount of items in this game. It makes sense given you’re trapped underground and most of the items are on the top floor. But early game when you need it the most? Nowhere to be found.
- The corruption system is a load of garbage. You basically have to balance it out. Since this game is before Seed of Evil that perfected this mechanic, it means there are huge flaws. Every battle you engage in increases the corruption meter. It does not matter if you win without taking damage. Only by running away can you avoid it going up. A higher corruption is linked to a higher level which gives Mina back most of her abilities she lost. However, if the corruption is too high, game over and you have to New Game+. You can’t beat the final boss if you’re too low of a level, but you have to be at the right level where you don’t get the game over. I was so pissed how I was near the final room but because I had to do a forced enemy encounter (there are a lot of them on the final floor), I couldn’t escape the increase in the meter and it was a forced NG+ at the very fucking end! There aren’t enough items that can reduce the corruption level either and one loss of a battle makes it point. With every area you complete, Sarah can increase how much corruption you can take, but this won’t mean much if you’re near the point of a game over. To make matters worse, unless Sarah is in the room with you when you rest, you will always gain corruption. Yes, you get punished for wanting to heal. Story wise, this makes sense but seeing as how you can’t go back down once you’re in the final area, you are forced to rest thus forcing the meter to go up.
- Most of Sarah’s items can only be obtained in the final area. It’s annoying to hold onto a lot of items enemies drop only to be unable to have any use until near the end of the game where you’re pretty much ready with your weapons and armor. You needed the healing items in the earlier areas. Not the end game (except for the boss).
- While the final boss is challenging, she’s also incredibly unfair. The game expects you to keep track of the turn pattern so you’re not destroyed in a few turns.
- Enemies respawn when you leave the room. This doesn’t apply on the final floor (and why it's way easier to beat). Since getting lost on the bottom floors is going to happen, the game punishes you for not knowing the layout.
- There are a lot of pointless events on the first two floors where participating in it doesn’t earn you anything but losing means increasing the corruption level. Special mention goes to the slime enemy where you can choose to hear it out (it's a trap), or just take control of it to learn what it wants to do. Since there’s no item for getting them to leave, it’s just a waste of time.
- The sudden stealth mission to get past the Reaper is pure RNG. You will be waiting around for minutes on end for the stupid AI to move in a direction. You have to pray it's not looking at you when you go in the right direction. The worse part is this stupid Reaper will almost always stand directly in front of the exit. So you do need to intentionally be spotted only for the Reaper to not be able to get to you because of a sudden hole in the floor. You get punished regardless if you either get caught or escape (and go into the acid trip area).
- When I beat the game and was told “it wasn’t the good ending” I wanted to scream. To everyone who plays this game. GO BACK TO THE BASEMENT BEFORE THE FINAL AREA. Mina did say she needed to rescue the other girls who were caught. I forgot because I just assumed that she would have done that. But no, she will outright abandon them if you fight the final boss and win. Given how much pain I have gone through, I just said “Nope”.
