Euphoria is yet another title, where ratings and popularity, are tied to the violent nature of some H-scenes, but personally, there's enough merit here to use the expression good "VN". Euphoria's real issues are inability to progress the setting, and the true ending segment. This is a title that has a good concept, and no idea what to do with it. The reader is left with a half-baked story, that never feels completely satisfying, and that's worse than any available tag.
Positive:
- Premise - If we remove H-scenes from the equation, this is Euphoria's real selling point. It's an extreme and mysterious situation, that immediately rewards your limited agency, by showing you a glimpse of the characters true nature. You can also regard this as a sort of thought experiment, that can (slightly) influence internal paradigms, but this is not a direct product of the VN (cogitate over manure, and it will soon become "philosophical" as well.)
- H-scenes - Scat is ... What it is. What we have here is solid (No!) adult content within its tags. Personally, all the scenes with Rika (and immediately picking her), are a win, and whatever the connotation, the character development (by way of 18+) is certainly there (her route is another story). There's more to them though: Quantity, build-up, diversity, originality, visual concept, dialogue, true to adult purpose (not the "S tag"), connection to plot... They are good.
- Kanae and Nemu - Without spoilers, they bothered with clues to their true personalities, and the rest of the cast is also helping matters, by way of comparison. If you plan on reading this, pay close attention to the reactions of each heroine and how "mentally tough" they are. It should become apparent, that some things are out of place (not corresponding to archetype). Another highlight of the VN.
Negative:
- True ending segment is dumb. There's no other way to put it, its sheer disappointment. After all the surreal plot devices, and the back and forth between "existences", you wrap it up in the most mundane way available. Really? The "big setting twist" is another problem, because it's filled with too much fantastical: It's a special person, and it needs bad feelings, rich people are clearly stupid, memories get deleted, but not really... Convoluted, and unrewarding. Personally, the writer only had half the script well defined, in "its" head. Route quality is also uneven, some of them are a waste of time.
Score: 7/10. The H-scenes, the first half of the game, difference factor, and a number of particular (positive) details allow for a high score. This has many problems outside controversy, and infamy related parameters, so approach it with extra caution. Recommended, if the synopsis is appealing, and tags are not an obstacle.
