Summary: So far, a rather simplistic “Starting at college with intentions to turn a new leaf” story, where the main story takes the backseat. Instead, the characters development becomes the focal point with roughly half the time spend on the daily slice of life stuff and the other half on the individual sub-plots of each heroine.
Some of the LI’s and side characters know each other in advance from their former school. We, the MC and some of the other LI’s join in and thus we have the social core around which most of the slice of life content is centered. As for the slice of life stuff, MC and most LI’s are college freshmen. We get to see them attend a couple fairly generic classes, which is certainly better than other AVNs where the MC’s are students but where the writer pretty much ignores everything related to MC actually attending an education.
In the played 0.4 version there exists a couple of allusions to a grander plot as well as a number of plot holes. These hints and holes have since then been slated for removal with the remade 0.4.5 version. This remaking process will also addresses other issues like clothing and personality inconsistencies, as well as the initial versions giving some LI's very little screentime. Still, 5 or 6 of the LI’s get enough screentime to come across as attractive and reasonably multifaceted and unique. Fates Collide is stated to be a non-harem game, so I wonder how that will look later in development, as you so far are able to pursue several LI’s at a time and get high points with at least 3 during a single run.
As it stands, Fates features an MC that is neither wimp nor Gary-Stu. It has 7 main LI’s with 2 sidegirls so far, all of whom seems well written and believable as characters. Relative to most other AVN’s I have tried, FC excels with its inclusion of male side characters in the roles of allies and not just the trite goon, villain and clown roles. Maybe being a non-harem title allows for readers with low self-confidence to not perceive them as immediate threats? As the initial 3 versions are in the progress of being moderately rewritten, I will end the summary here and continue below.
Pros:
- Male side characters are handled well. They are well rounded and not one-note characters. They are integrated into the plot and have interactions with you as well as the LI’s.
- A fairly neutral MC who doesn’t stray into the disliked archetypes of “wimp”, “Gary-Stu”, “White Knight” (maybe a little bit, depending on choices made) or “Alpha”.
- The choices you get to make allow you to both shape and define the MC you want to play, within fairly tight confines.
- Choices so far seems to have a good amount of influence on what options you will get later on. Some decisions have obvious outcomes. Most of the time you will only have a hunch as to what might be best, usually if you are good at remembering details.
- LI’s are unique in looks and personality and have a nice range of clothing seen over the comparatively short duration that FC currently has.
- Pretty rad soundtrack so far. The usage of certain effects, visual and audio, as well as pop cultural references are done well and most importantly, not overused. At least not yet.
Mehs and hit/miss:
- While it reflects real life somewhat accurately, I found that you occasionally had to make choices that seemed unintuitive or counterproductive to your goal of gaining points with a specific LI.
- The LI with the least screentime also suffers from inconsistent looks and is the most unlikeable of the bunch so far. Plans to fix her story sections are in place, but this as well as her current personality makes her stand out in a bad way.
- The earlier parts contain a couple creepster decisions. I didn’t check them out myself but it’s worth mentioning. They are however also planned for removal or at least to be edited into more socially acceptable actions with the ongoing reworking process.
- As Fates Collide is not going to be a harem title, I would say that 7 LI’s may be a little too ambitious for its own good. The strength and attractiveness of the harem genre, beyond the power fantasy itself, is that the writer doesn’t have to write X number of individual routes but only the one combined route, once all active LI’s have joined the ranks. A 7 LI harem will likely take the same amount of effort as 4 or 5 individual routes, depending on how much influence each LI has on the core harem story and how much of her own story has been resolved in advance.
- It’s a little unclear to me what makes certain renders eligible to be included in the gallery. For the most part they are lewd in nature, but a few aren’t at all. The gallery seems kinda inconsistent in this regard.
Cons:
- IDK, MC’s haircut was fixed for 0.4, not that I considered it an actual CON to begin with. Hmmmm. Maybe the antagonists of this story seemed a bit too much like generic cartoon styled villains in the way they were presented? They haven’t had that much screentime as of yet.
- Fates Collide would probably benefit from getting some sort of calendar system implemented, at least some sort of time-passage screen each time one day ends and another begins. Currently, it wasn’t always clear what day it was and how much time would need to pass before a planned story-event was going to happen. “Oh, so tomorrow I will go running with LI 4 and the day after in the evening I will head to a party together with LI 1 and 3 and join number 2 at the party.” Just creating a better sense of where we are, temporally speaking.
Also, where are my manners:
Levy = Serena > Avis > Koko = Raiko > Valentina > Eiko.
