Tbh they could release it next November and still be more consistent and transparent than most devs.
Right now I think it's just whether or not the coder can recover from burnout. If it's clear that he can't then I guess the artist will have to help code the update or finish it up if it's that close to completion. Then it's in the air whether they will try to expand staff to reduce the load or not.
Personally, I think they're mostly done but don't want to set a release date too early to keep pressure low and perhaps to plan for future updates and have a more manageable calendar.
