I know you weren't replying to me, and I don't want to speak for the other guy, but I think he means that the father's reasons behind his actions are sensible. His actions themselves, on the other hand, are exactly as you say, ultra toxic and counter-productive. While, yeah, the father is a bit of a cliche, his attitudes and the way he talks etc., but I think Neon has done a good job at making a multi-layered character here. Because ignoring the obnoxious tone and coldly expressed sentiments, I honestly see every father behind there. His methods are what are problematic. Well, and his lack of showing love of course. Sadly, that's probably something passed down through the family.
