I was watching some random youtube docu about the Aztecs a while back. There is this thing called Ixiptla. It's a custom/ritual where some dude wears a costume of a deity and is assumed to embody that god's soul or whatever. Basically, he is treated like a god for a year, where he is paraded around and interact with the peoples. And then he is sacrificed and probably cannibalized lol. Something like that. They choose the next dude to wear the costume for a year after and the cycle continues.
I'm sure there is a porn plot in there somewhere.

Do that, live like a diety for a whole year, eve of the sacrifice get someone blackout drunk/drugged, put costume on him, watch as he is sacrificed the next morning. Volunteer to be next one wearing the costume, rinse and repeat.

I think it could be really interesting!
But, if you want to go for realism, the problem could be that players can't really relate to a culture which is so alien to them.
If you can find it in a language you understand, I recommend reading the comic Quetzalcoatl by Mitton.
