For reviews, I just look at the bad ones and see the quality of those critics.
If they make sense and are well articulated, and what they complain about is something that bother me, I pass.
5 stars reviews are often useless...
I've noticed largely the same thing, 5 star rating but the reasoning is I liked it and typing a bunch of nonsense to hit minimum characters. I usually do the same thing and just read the well thought out negative and middling reviews, not to say there aren't substantive 5 star review but they are few and far between.
1 star reviews? 99% absolute garbage to shit on a game.
5 star reviews? 99% garbage because many people throw them out for no reason. Hell they even give 5 stars when they have more cons than pro's in their review.
So either read the ones that have 2-4 stars or limit yourself to read reviews when you're taking a shit.
Yeah for sure, lots of people throw out "balancing" scores, I liked it but the guy below me only gave it 2 so even though there was a ton of stuff i didnt like ill give it 5.
Most early builds with 5 star ratings. A lot of people will just slap a high rating on first or second releases in the hopes that encouraging the dev will keep them motivated. Not only does this never work, but it completely skews the ratings on bad games when later builds do prove to be trash. 2 years later you wind up with a 4 star average but only about 20 pages in the thread because nobody is playing the game.
OMG yes, this is kind of why I started the thread. lot of games ive tried cause glowing reviews, get done and im like "wtf did they see in this" and you go to the early reviews and it turns out it was potential.
Having the numerical star rating at all is a bad decision imo. There are too many different sets of expectations that people can come into a porn game with to make any kind of standardization of objective quality. Having reviews is fine, but trying to boil them down to a number with no attached scale or rubric for what that number means is an over simplification that makes it largely useless.
It would be interesting to see keeping the numerical but adding more categories to change weighting or if there was some sort of template to review by or as I mentioned earlier seperate ratings, one on aggregate and a weighted average based only on substantive reviews that are more that actually explain their reasoning.
