I realise that's a cumbersome title, but it's not a specific genre I know how to phrase otherwise.
A very specific example of the type of game I'm looking for would be
I enjoy the aspects of a game world that is at least somewhat autonomous in terms of people doing things without the main character's specific interaction.
Things I do not like -
The Sims (it's a lot of effort for little payoff in my opinion)
Most Ren'py/VNs (they tend to be very low on the interactivity front and don't appeal to me. Feel free to change my mind though.
