A well-elaborated and expansive fantasy that features a suite of characters, locations and world lores. However the developer either needs to increase the frequency of updates or concentrate on the main story as it shows signs of drifting.
Story
MC is killed and resurrected by a minor god to take part in a war with eleven other contestants to become an ultimate being. Thus begins his adventures to kill, coerce or persuade other contestants to his cause in a fantasy land.
The main plot is typical of those found in fantasy RPGs and AVNs. Old school as it might be, not many developers execute their world and character building convincingly, thankfully Genesis belongs to a minority that does them well.
However recently minor side stories, dream sequences, slice of life events have proliferated to the detriment of moving the story forward. At Ep 24 we have only seen one contestant killed, one given up and another missing - the remaining eight have not even appeared to date.
While these distractions are not without value, they are only enriching if the developer updates frequently. It’s disappointing to wait for months only to get a dream sequence or mini story that is not even part of the main game.
Game Mechanics
AVN with choices most of which have no impact. The key ones are those that drive MC towards the light, dark or twilight paths, I presume they have impact at a later stage though variations are minor for now.
Battle choices is picking the right one depending on enemy stance, interesting the first time but pointless subsequently. Some of the quizzes require exact word answers which can be difficult, but are solvable with some googling.
Background / Character Renders
One of the stronger points of Genesis - background fits the story well and there is minimal use of generic CGIs which helps immersion. Character are plentiful and unique enough to be easily distinguishable and fit into the game universe as well.
The use of dark colors, simple lighting as well as no frills traditional outfits reminds me of old school fantasy RPG games back when not every graphics artist tries to dress up fantasy characters in all sorts of out-sized impractical lavish trinkets as if they were Christmas trees.
Character Development
Character development focuses on the MC which we get a detailed look at his inner thoughts, conflicts and emotions with various characters. MC has a mild tendency to self-doubt, but it’s done sparingly not to the point of being an irritating doormat.
However as many of the LIs are just touch and go and only join the MC for a part of the adventure, there is not much screen time given to them to fully flesh out.
Sex Scenes
Simple but hot. You aren’t going to find strange kinkiness in them, but animations are short, smooth and on point while dialogue is complimenting. Many threesome scenes are done well and memorable. Only thing I wish is more variety in BGM, all the sex scenes feature the same music regardless of circumstances which isn’t ideal.
BGM and Sound Effects
BGMs are selected well especially the emotional ones which help to drive the mood across, sound effects are minimal like dropping, door knocking, flame etc.
Conclusion
Overall a solid 4-star experience - I like the detailed world building and MC’s personal development. The story is not original but entertaining nonetheless, but the unbridled introduction of secondary distractions breaks momentum and have players wondering where the whole game is heading at times.
It would also be good to have one / a few main LIs where their relationship and character is flashed out more instead of the pass and go with everyone currently.
