This review is only for Part 1!
I will try to remember to update it when I have finished with Part 2!
Honestly, it's great. I think this is my current #1 VN - but the only competetors are others on this site.
Even still, there's some heavy hitters, and Genex Love at least holds their own against them.
Writing 4.9/5
The writing is very solid, and genuinely convincing, which I have found to be rare!
I'm really liking the approach of "evil heroes" and the Thread and such, and really hope they go into this even more.
Sometimes it can be lame or otherwise cliche, but these moments are generally rare and passable enough.
My biggest gripe with the writing is the whole rage thing. That I find a bit lame if I'm honest, but it seems like something of an anime cliche so this isn't an issue I have with this game specifically.
Then also, the ending (of part 1) was a bit ehhh for me. Again, too cliche for my liking.
I'm really not convinced that the MC WOULDN'T have died there, nor why they were unable to use any of their multiple abilities to fight.
But it's fine, it was dramatic and all that.
There are a LOT of choices, but I'm not really the kind of person to replay an entire game where "most" things are similar, just to see some alternate lines of dialogue. So I don't really know how much impact the choices have beyond locking you out of some scenes with the girls.
If I'm honest, I wish I did less white-knighting to try to be a True Hero, as after more exposure, for example to Jesus and The Thread's treatment of Winter, I maybe should have gone a more Vigilante route.
I'm very interested as well as to what the Villian route changes, but again, there's simply too many hours of gameplay for me to do a whole other playthrough to see.
Gameplay 5/5
GL's approach to VN is the best I've played so far, where instead of a completely sandbox "roam the world and interact with literally everything that is interactable until something of marginal interest happens" style,
the game's primary loop is ACTUAL GAMEPLAY you do during the afternoon and night, and the scenes happen separately in their own pockets of time.
This gameplay is of the management genre, as well as (admittedly pretty easy) turn-based combat. Both, though, are very well-done.
I really like this approach, because it
A. Felt like this was an actual game - it felt like I was actually DOING something instead of just reading endless dialogue, and
B. It never felt like the game was wasting my time.
I appreciate the looming presence of a lose condition (I'm assuming, I guess I never did let my threat level get to 100%, but it is implied you will lose if that happens), because this makes it so that you're always DOING something - training to make fights easier, recruiting to make "not-fighting" easier, working for money, or fighting to reduce threat level.
If I'm completely honest, there almost might even have been TOO much to do, since I virtually never had time to train. Luckily this was never a problem, and all fights were actually pretty easy, even when choosing "High Risk" fights.
And again, throughout all that above activity, the scenes just naturally happen - the gameplay never competes with having a scene with a girl (with some narrative exceptions).
It's like the VN and Gameplay elements are separated, and I really love the approach.
It makes the game far far easier to play and, more importantly, to enjoy!
Sound Design 5/5
The Sound Design is exactly what I'd expect - there is background music and sound effects that very, very effectively enhance the experience without being distracting.
Girl Design 5/5
While the proportions of most of the girls is truly excellent, I actually want to point out that the girls are even better because of their narratives.
It is rare where I am actually convinced of a character in these kinds of games, as most are just boobs on a body.
But these characters actually have good stories, and a lot of development (for some, not so much for others).
For things I didn't like, it's not too much honestly.
Mainly, I think the art style looks a bit outdated, mostly in the form of a lack of detail in the characters.
Everything is just so... smooth? I don't really know how to word it. But it's a certain "Ren'Py" style that a lot of VNs use, so it isn't a criticism unique to this game. Just not my specific cuppa, but everything else more than makes it tolerable. Unfortunately, it does make the NSFW scenes less exciting for me personally. But again, that's a "me thing", not the game doing anything wrong.
Secondly, at one point I reached what I'm assuming a "Part 2 (still in Part 1 though)", as the quality of a LOT of things increased.
It also added a LOAD of new mechanics, like the prison and new powers, and this was a very pleasant suprise!
However, I think I then reached what I will call a "Part 3 of Part 1", and the quality of the NSFW animations increased, however, the writing decreased a little bit, as over the course of like 3 or 4 days I was constantly popping the cherry of every girl I'd met up to that point.
The game had been very, VERY well-paced up to that point, so it was weird to suddenly be faced with a figurative onslaught, haha.
Overall, this is one of the best I've played and genuinely might go and support the creator(s), because this is definitely the kind of quality content I want to see in this space!
Really looking forward to more, both in this... "series?" and whatever else the creator(s) do!
