Ren'Py - Get Out of Bed [v0.2] [Slavien Games]

    When I set out to play these first releases I always look for something trashy to make fun of or something interesting/well made to keep my eye on.
    At first I thought 'Get Out of Bed' was that trashy game to gawk at but after playing it I don't know anymore. So the TL;DR is this: 'Get Out of Bed' (v0.2) is terrible in some areas, great in others but mostly mediocre or barely serviceable. I don't think it's worth playing right now but with a couple of key changes the dev could have a hidden gem here

    ★ Presentation
    It's messy, I do like the abundance of misc. sound effects, choice of music, scene transitions and the way some sprites change to indicate an action
    However, the graphic design stuff needs a lot of work, the menu screen looks like a bunch of lifeless mannequins standing around with power point text slapped over, being unable to save during free roams is terrible and a lot of the assets don't mesh well since quality is all over the place

    Gameplay
    This is setting up to be a visual novel with multiple branches, high replayability, bad ends and free roams. Right now free roams are terrible, it's hard to follow which arrow leads where and the VN gameplay sorta plays like a choose your own adventure book but it's barebones for now. As long as Dev keeps his story tight it has the potential to be something unique and fun to play.

    Best part about the game, nothing special mind you but the music and sound effect choices are well put together with just a couple of duds.

    Writing
    Setting up the tone for your VN is very important, if you start the tutorial section with constant toilet humor, 4th wall breaks and 'lol so randumb XD' stuff you run the risk of players treating the rest of it as a joke, by the time the tone gets somber you get whiplash since it's hard to make sense of what you are supposed to take seriously or not. I'm not saying that the type of humor here shouldn't be done ( I did chuckle twice) but rather for this type of story when it comes to humor a less is more approach could've been more beneficial. I can tell that Dev has been in some dark pits before so this is for sure one of the most promising aspects of this project. A couple of typos aside the technical side of writing is decent.

    ★ Visuals ★
    Terrible, no other way to cut it. Even on its best days DAZ always has this smear of ugliness that is hard to get rid of. Models in this game look like a work in progress DAZ studio snapshot, they have no lighting or texture mapping, the poses look stiff and expressions are soulless. I understand not everybody has a 12gb vram card laying around but if budget is a concern maybe try applying some AI filters, it probably won't help much but anything is better than what we currently have. A different approach is needed.

    Last thoughts

    Overall this is a very promising project, a lot of it feels heartfelt and I'm interested to see what the Dev plans to do with this since it does need a lot of work still, because right now I don't see it in a playable state without some major reworks.
