Hey guys I'm completely new to 3D modelling and want to make sure I'm on the right path here.

Currently my plan is to make 3D models, animate them, and put them in a game. To me it seems like there are two paths to this that I can pursue without spending too much money:
  • Make models from scratch in blender and import them into unity
  • Pose and edit premade models in daz3d and import them into unity
Are these both viable ways to go? Which would you prefer?

P.S. From reading the now read-only affect3d forum it seems that thedude3dx did some tutorials on this, but I can't seem to find them anywhere. Does anyone know where to get them?

When it comes to characters, I would suggest you to use a character creator, there are many around, both free and paid (See Makehuman, for instance).
Since you have mentioned blender, there is a plugin that does exactly that within blender, too.
I would suggest the first option.

As for the tutorials, I believe you were looking for this:

Can I port the characters that I do with humanmake or another program to DAZ 3D?
