I gave it a try and, well, the level of self masturbatory is high, really high. Reddit have always been full of karma whores, but apparently it became worse since last time I logged in there.
In the context of the sub, AVN stand for Adult Visual Novel.
Not sure when you last logged in, but it's been almost unbearable for about 4 years. And 2-3 years ago they started hiding the porn subreddits. You can still find them if you know what they're called, but don't expect to just stumble across a new one by browsing. I used to find some good stuff browsing New. Now I can't even find fat chicks in Controversial.

So not long after I last logged because it started to become too messy for my liking.
This explain a lot. Average Joe will not find them and starts having normal discussion. It's only those who are really interested by the subject that will end here, and obviously if you want to have normal discussion, you run away when you see the state of the sub. Especially, in this particular case, if you know that there's already good forums (here but not only) where you can have effectively discussions.

Yeah Reddit is a complete dumpster fire at this point. It used to be a great site pre 2016 or so. Now it is so heavily astroturfed and curated its like a ghetto Matrix. The people who largely control it are among the most pathetic individuals that I have come across. Some of it is hilarious, some of it is just....bizarre.
