Abandonware. I've suffered through the whole of the game and what the other reviews said are correct.
There are 2 poor animations, one with a grasshopper person and one with a slug, with the female sprite changing depending on which plant was destroyed, it matters not which monster kills the plant, as the animation is random.
It also gives you no information about what each plant does, leaving you to have to plant her to figure out, there are 2 defensive plants, blue hair and the scouter wearer, they seem to be the same, but the Cactus(the scouter wearer) has faster attacks, seemingly attacking twice as fast, but does half the damage as blue hair, maybe she has more hit points to justify her being the most expensive plant, but I don't care to figure that out.
Just place Potatoes and Tomatoes until you can start affording Blue Hair, then place Blue hair around the edge of the fence to wall off 8 tiles that you'll eventually replace with only Watermelons. There, until day 17 or 18, you can let it idle. Due to the Cockroaches (no animation for them), you can't really idle past them and thus have to be more active in defending and replacing plants.
Hell, even despite that, the gallery doesn't even fully unlock after you beat day 20, only showing you that which you've already seen, but if you don't suffer through all 20 days, the gallery is locked and entirely inaccessible, which is why I say it is abandonware, it ends in to be continued, nothing else. Hell, the version isn't even 1.0, it is I think 0.1, yet there will be no further updates.
