Pretty much this. Your best shot is by going with the most popular first, as they have more story to it and verified quality. Also make sure to check the Genres in a game's thread to further narrow down what you might find interesting.

I could mention a few titles that I personally like such as "The Ramen Prince", "Acting Lessons", "Melody" etc... but not every game suits every person. You and I might have different preferences hence the somewhat 'hostile' tone in the initial responses.
This site/forum has an excellent search function that one can utilize to search for keywords/tags and thus find games that match one's preferences. One can also become inspired by the signatures of the other users in here and try those games that they value enough to have a banner of the game displayed in their signatures. Welcome.
