Yes it is real.
It is to prevent obnoxiously big signatures that make pages load for ages and annoy the shit out of people, like the one you tried to have

Because people were abusing the signatures, you can only include 3 images at most iirc and no more than 200px height.

If you to include all these images, the only way is to make a gif that shows more than one.
