Version 0.3.3
HIM has a functional story laid on top of a somewhat clunky game mechanic but this is more than offset by plenty of high quality graphics and animations. It's one of those AVNs where you don't stay for the story but playthrough remains tolerable enough to make it to the NSFW scenes which are more than worth it.
Story
MC got isekaied into a medieval fantasy world and lost most of his memories in the process, he is then recruited to work for the queen and takes on various quests while bedding a variety of girls along the way. It's cliche but not to the point of being totally lame.
The plot is generally unintrusive like still water - i.e. it just sits in the background monotonously with flat pacing and minimal excitement while you trudge along to see the next LI's scene.
Game Mechanic
A standard AVN with the occasional free roam. So far much of the free roam appears pointless and could have easily been carried over with standard VN narration, the only sandbox that is mildly interesting is that of a D&D board game simulation near the end of Chapter 3.
There are standard choices that allow players to reject LIs or affect the morality of MC, but so far their effects on the story and dialogue are negligible.
Background / Character Renders
It's apparent the developer's strengths lies in background and character designs. Although there is some usage of stock backgrounds in HIM, there are at least more than enough tweaks and original ones to still feel fresh in HIM.
Most of the LIs are unique and well-designed with highly distinguishable features. Kudos to the character models for the Queen, her sister Avery and daughter Rebecca. They share unmistakable similarities in looks as family but yet different enough you never get confused. The care and attention to details in this aspect is well appreciated.
And a great feature is you get to decide whether the main LI, Alex, is a woman or femboy. That should add some spice and flexibility to account for varied taste.
Character Development
One of the game's weak spots - the MC is bland and uninspiring. The guy has no character and simply goes with the flow and whether you mould him as good or evil makes no difference. This affects immersion negatively as MC feels more like a NPC tool rather than someone players can relate to.
There are plenty of LIs, but once again not enough time and space given to them to nurture their characters. From experience, six LIs is probably the max an AVN can push for without sacrificing character depth and HIM definitely has way more than that even at V0.3.3.
Sex Scenes
As an AVN, most flaws can be overlooked if the sex is done well and happy to report that HIM has very good posing and animations when it comes to lewds. Buildup and dialogue is on the light side, but at least it's not a one sentence per render sort of thing and animations are very smooth with multiple angles and poses to cater for taste.
One main area of improvement is there are way too many choices presented during scenes. I can understand the need for player agency when it comes to kinks like anal, feet or CIM, but there is no need to expect player input for every change in scene. It's disruptive and serves no purpose.
BGM and Sound Effects
There is a small collection of BGM tracks that fit the story, but this is often interrupted by significant periods of silence randomly. The same goes for ambient noises, sometimes it's there sometimes it isn't and the choice feels arbitrary rather than purposeful to enhance the mood.
Sound effects are minimal and largely forgettable.
Conclusion
HIM at its current developmental stage is lop-sided. On one hand it features very strong character designs and sex scenes, but the game mechanics, sound and character development could do with some work. The story is passable and serves its purpose.
I would rate this a 3.5+ piece of work currently, it should be able to reach 4.0 standards if the developer fixes a couple of low hanging fruits such as sound, game mechanics and focus on a more manageable number of LIs instead.
