Yeah, I guess it is a bit much to expect all things considered. While it doesn't need porn to work, using elements of adult concepts like topics/kinks, language, and some visuals does help in the emotional breaking points of the story to really drive the heart break as well as put the FMC/Antagonist into a depraved shocking view.

I guess that is why I like L&J so much, seems like a love story, builds and them WHAM, it hits with some shock value that is bone rattling that you can't help but feel the pain of the MC as he struggles with everything. While it does have "porn logic" in some of it, there is some tangible reality to it that makes it feel relatable rather than the obvious almost comical moronic stories that you usually see.
