...Actually, "motive" is derived from/related to the word "motivation" (or maybe the other way around...who knows? I am grossly simplifying it here anyway) and basically means "the reason someone has for wanting to do a specific thing." For instance, if I were to, say...travel back in time to about 1930 and assassinate Adolf Hitler, my motive for doing so would be to stop World War 2 from ever happening.
It is admittedly a really stupid motive since time travel is such a hot mess to deal with overall, but it works as an example.
