Hoshi Ori Yume Mirai (HOYM) has one brilliant concept, that is immediately worth the price of admission: Watching people over a period of time. "Way back when" it was magazines with articles on the stars, now it's social media. Humans like to keep tabs on each other and knowing about life events. And that's pretty much all it takes to make a comfy read, because the girls help, and the general feeling is one of pleasantness. The main issue HOYM faces is duration, and only a huge fan of pure love, and the aforementioned concept, could possibly withstand 70 hours of this.
Positive:
- Comfy read - 1 of the main reasons to try this VN. Play the common route, pick a heroine, watch their life unfold across a period of time. It's a winning concept.
- Heroines - They benefit heavily from the topic above, and route duration, but truth be told they are not created equal. Still, likability is very high, and the development over time is literal.
- Rarity - There aren't a lot of things like HOYM. That's what's really selling it, if this type of romance was more common, this VN wouldn't stand out so much.
- Production values - They will never be enough (quantity) because of duration, but what's available is generally good. In particular the OST, and some guitar tracks.
Negative:
- Duration - It's a weird situation, where different writers decided to follow the same model (life events): Basically the circumstances of the routes are too similar (not different enough actually), and if you read all of it, it's just romance with a different girl each time. Normally, you'd just roll with all the expected "tropey" scenes, but with a 70 hour VN that's not possible (the "adult" routes, are a bit better, something simple like work or university, changes things). In short, i can tolerate the dates, confessions, first kisses... in a 20, 30 hour VN if it's accompanied by drama, comedy, action, tragedy, violence, lots of tags, and more. That's not what happens here (it's romance all the way), so personally the boring factor is stopping most of the praise.
Score: 6/10. A great VN, if you pick your favorite heroine, watch her 2 routes, and go on your merry way. Any more than that doesn't work, personally speaking. There's a lot of good here, but every single positive gets murky when accounting for duration, and provided content diversity. Recommended to die-hard fans of pure love romance.
