How common are animations in 3D Rendered games?

I have never played a game with 3D Renders so I have no clue about how common animations are in those games.
I have played many 2D games with still frames and they are fairly successful, too.
What about games with 3D Renders? Are they as common or would you say that most of them are animated?

I thought I had played many games with 3D renders, but now I'm not so sure.

I'll just hang out and wait to be educated. :D

At first, animations were a novelty.
Some had a few, some used 2 images loops while others used only stills.

But after a point (think it was due to milf city) people wanted more animations. It then turned into a must-have.
Then a lot of failed animations appeared and people changed it into "rather want good still than bad animations."

I will say that it's not a must. But more and more devs are adding it. I am still practicing it.
I'm not going to add it whenever I do an event for sinners only but I still want it in the game.

Also, should give some 3d games a try. A lot of em are not like before with the silly style which turned a lot of 2d lovers away from 3d. Nowadays many of them have a more serious tone and not the slice of life it used to be.

I think animations in 3D games is now pretty standart for bigger devs because making animations means big time for rendering and good machine for it.

For smuller dev's it is not "must have" from begining, but later same as bigger ones. For me is animations standart and I don't mean that 3 second's loops, because animations is the reason why I'm doing that games and my goal is making them better and better to the possible point :)

I tend to watch for animation tag but for the opposite reason to some people, I generally avoid them.

Very few devs do it well, the rest are jumpy, janky, shit, annoying stop frame "animations" that completely ruin the game for me to the point where if I see it once i'll delete it.

Dreams of Desire was the first I saw and it put me off. Never managed to finish the game, the "animations" are just too shit.

Sadly they are becoming more common which means I miss out on quite a few games.

I'm in hope my is exception :)

Back to thread. From my view with bigger team my games will be animated fully, it is not much bigger deal to do, than do 20 renders what I'm doing now. Just more time in rendering. And as I said at begining more money = more animations.

I do enjoy animated sex scenes (if they're looped and don't stop every 5 seconds). Not too many games that I enjoy have that.

It's a trend, there is no denying that.

For me though, it's not important in 3D rendered games. They are a lot about imagination, as they are static most of the time, and none of the animated sex scenes I've seen is better than what I can imagine. Thus, they are often more distracting than helpful. That said, I can appreciate when they are done well, even though they don't make the scene for me.

Quality of animations is much more important in full 3D games, where the imagination plays lesser role.

I got a bit sidetracked from the original question. I don't have the numbers to back it up, but since I play almost exclusively 3D rendered games, I can hypothesise that both the supply and demand for animations are growing.

In this instance, to render, means to make a 2D image, or series of images from a virtual 3D environment.
Even viewing a 3D environment on a monitor is rendered 2 dimensional.
So technically these are all 2D games.

At least most of the current games have some sort of animation if you count the stop frame stuff. Some of the bigger names have "real" animations. My game has "real" animations. It's common, but not all games have some.

@polywog yes, but he asked for 3d "rendered" games :p

3D and 2D comming from style how it is maked, no how it is looks when finished. I can make cartoonish looking 3D animation looking like Summertime saga, but it is comming from 3D models and positioning them. On other hand 2D animation means picture by picture animation.

Exelent example of 2D animation making:
Everythink maked another way than this is 3D animation.

As most already said, better good still images than bad animations. I tend to skip bad animations, so I basically skip the sex scenes.

But what I really really enjoy seeing animated are just the normal things in life like walking :D I think "Girl House" has this sexy walking animation for example. Or another example the animation of the eye blinking during conversations in "Being a DIK", that was incredible. I was more impressed by this than some sex animations. And what is really impressive as well are animations, where you also see smaller body parts animated and where you nearly can see the muscles move. I think "Milfy City" does this well. Just dome examples, but there are of course more games with nice animations.
On the other hand there are games with incredible art, where I just think. Please don't make any bad animations :D

I can't speak to how common it is, but I think I'm safe saying that it's a thing you shouldn't do if you aren't sure you can do it well.

I think "do it well" in this case would mean having enough frames (or some really badass inbetweening and JUST enough frames I guess? I'm not a real animator lol), having good posing in the frames, and a smooth overall result with the loop.

I mean, if you look at it and don't love it, it's probably better to err on the not animated side. Not that you have to love your first tries at it, but I mean if what ends up in the finished product isn't something that you think is a really great effort, then other folks aren't likely to be impressed with it either. Kinda obvious, I guess, but I don't think it's a thing with which people will tolerate corner cutting.

Anyhow, I'm not a dev and I don't even play prerendered 3D games, so, uh... Take with a grain of salt.

Daz Studio is used to make pictures. When you play the game Daz Studio, the MC is an amateur photographer, with a cheap fixed-focus disposable camera. The player poses models, grabs his/her camera and takes pictures. Sends them off to be developed at the (Iray-walmart 60-minute photo) You get the pictures back, and what you thought would be a cool animation looks horrible. You were not holding the camera steady, so the animation is wobbling all over the place. The models weren't cooperating, their feet were sliding everywhere, the movements were jerky, and harsh because you were working blindly (daz doesn't do real-time shuttle and jog playback), and rushed things a bit.

Being "photographer" does not work for animation. You need to set up 3 or 4 cameras and don't touch them. If you want to do a 1st person view, where the camera nods up and down while you're fucking, that's up to you, it doesn't add to realism, it's usually nauseating.

From my experience. Good sex animation is hard. Even I got full controlling system in unity. Without motion capture, it was waste of time and I decide to give up until find a satisfied solution.

However an experienced 3d animator in this field maybe can create someting good. Time to time I found good examples in porn sites.
