How did male goblin protagonist games as a genre come about?

There are a number of male goblin protagonist games and I've been curious about how they came about, it just feels like a very specific niche.

Is it a small number who really like it? Is there enough demand for it? Or did someone just add goblin 3d at one point and a bunch of devs decided to use them like that time a 3d boat came onto the market?

I'm indifferent to goblin MCs (ironically), but I think there are certain traits in their folklore/fantasy that make them appealing for raunchy fantasy games with a sense of humor - as devious, anarchic, greedy little tricksters. Whereas in Japanese games, they seem to be more primitive and associated more with gangrape, as in Goblin Burrow.

Goblins are Ugly Bastards of fantasy setting.

And Ugly Bastards are pretty popular in hentai.

In addition to what Pretentious Goblin and Ross_69 wrote, in the past the typical evil fantasy creatures who where mostly used for rape (besides tentacles) where orcs. However, orcs have increasingly lost the typical vicious appeal (maybe even partial thanks to World of Warcraft).

And then this manga/anime Goblin Slayer became pretty poplular, whose MC... well, slays goblins. Their Goblins are evil and super rapey (if I remember correctly, several women are raped in the very first few chapters).

Goblins are not only hideous and malicious, but also small and weak, in opposite to orcs, who are big, strong hunks, which makes Goblins kinda interesting as antagonist in rape games.
And since they look and behave so differently than humans or orcs, it is easier to dehumanize them and one is more likely to accept abhorrent behavior from them.
I wouldn't even be surprised if some people perceive their sexual acts as a light (more aceptable) version of bestilality.

Like said above, goblins are ugly bastards for fantasy setting, and ugly bastards having sex with beautiful girls is a big fetish for many. Orcs were used a lot too, but since orcs became more and more like hunks with bodybuilder bodies, they started to look more desirable (despite their faces), thus not being that appealing for ugly x beauty scenes. Goblins are ugly, weak-looking midgets. Women falling for them is more degrading. Thus, their recent boom in appeal.

Ugly bastard seems to be the most common reply, but the ugly bastard is normally the nemesis whether it's the fat guy or the orc. There are some games with ugly protagonists but they seem to be a small minority.

But then perhaps its the ability to play an ugly bastard and degrade the female characters but with a level of disconnect that comes from being notably non human.

Goblins didn't used to have many numbers to influence games being made about them. A long time ago, their population was just in the few hundreds with some having small tribes but one day they all came together and wanted to venture out to conquer the world. They raided small human villages nearby and took them by surprise, easily smashing through their defenses and carrying off the women back to their caves depths. The news about the destroyed village was slow to spread but it sparked fear in other towns and towns implemented constant patrols for any goblins that may try to whisk away their woman.

After a bit of trying, goblins learned that humans were compatible with them and able to produce goblin offspring to increase their numbers more which provided potential for bigger raids from the exploding population. The goblins reach slowly expanded though their original goal slightly changed, they want to conquer the world and obtain all the women they could. They improved their weapons based on models seen when raiding towns, established a rank system for more coordinated attacks to improve hauls and expanded out into new caves to increase storage and breeding areas.

The capital established the Adventurers Guild where bounties with hefty rewards could be placed to destroy a suspected goblin cave to contain the spread or attempt to rescue a loved one before it was too late which ignited a period where EVERYONE wanted to become an adventurer for a chance to obtain riches. This lead to many disappearing from either underestimating the goblins or the caves being far larger than anticipated and becoming one of the new breeding females or killed if you were male. The bounties were later expanded to include other tasks with smaller rewards to minimize losses from goblins from the initial boom.

As the goblins reach grew more and more, the guild was worried about the adventurers losses incurred. They lost hundreds in a relatively short period and the adventurers drive to do goblin bounties was at an all time low to the point of where only one odd adventurer was doing them. He wore dark grey armor, was very quiet and would always come in the guild with a slight dead goblin smell to pick up his reward then find another bounty to leave with. After a few months of this routine, others dubbed him "Goblin Slayer" as he would complete all goblin bounties he picked up and it became a tradition to wait around drinking just to see him turn in multiple bounties when he came back from his hunt.

Hundreds of years later, historians dug up records of these events and released to the public. Game developers took a shot at making games with goblins to varying degrees of success and incorporated the caves and breeding mechanics as the main functions as the goblins would have wanted.

That's how modern day male goblin protagonist games rose up and Goblin Slayer grew to be the best goblin killer the world has ever known.

Totally worth the effort of writing all this lol

It's racism. Orcs are black people. They have BGC and are dumb brutes. Goblins are mexicans. They form gangs and are sneaky bastards. Elves are white people. They are the main targets of getting cucked.

I add goblins in my games. They represent negative male qualities (small, cowardly, immoral etc) so having a goblin seduce/conquer a beautiful human girl adds to her humiliation. In all goblin game I have seen so far, fucking the gobbo(s) was an act of humiliation or degradation of some sort.

Enclosing a preview from my upcoming update, featuring a gang of goblins about to overcome some thicc brigands.

Easy answer is ... Anime.
Anime came later. What started it were the comics, and what started those were visual novels. The first one I saw was an Asian novel about a human reincarnated as a goblin and then because they were a power gamer or MMO grinder or something in their previous life they became ridiculously overpowered in this universe that had game mechanics. Most of the goblin stuff I see seems based on the same trope of weakest monster: goblin (or slime) becoming ridiculously powerful because of: gimmick.

Numerous western games were made with goblin as MC parodying "Goblin Slayer" just after the adaptation of manga/novel to TV, so that's that.

Re:Monster was made 2012 but Im not sure if that was the earliest one or if theres an earlier one. Its kinda interesting digging into the history of this honestly. Highly recommend reading the novel by the way (not the comics), those are probably censored anyway. In the novel he captures women and does the sort of things you see in games around here.

Edit: Oh yeah there was another trope about being the weakest class before that. In Royal Road Weed, Weed (the guys character name) got the Moonlight Sculptor class, thats literally focused on art. So decent chance that started the "weakest thing" craze. Well I think it was before 2012, its hard to find when it released in the original language. That one was so popular many novels are still on a site called Royal Road as a reference to that novel.

Edit: Royal Road started in 2007 and apparently is a top eBook seller.
